bucking under power/hard start

90 T-Bird SC which bucks while under power after about 20 minutes of driving. After pulling over, and turning off the key, it will grind consistently for about 3 minutes (as though looking for a good spot on the distributor, which it doen't have) and will turn over. At this point, the RPM gage registers 0, and runs fine. After
5-10 mins the RPM gage returns to normal. Fuel pump, and filters have been replaced. Mechanic not much help. He ran the codes, and could find nothing electrical. Friend told me that if the check engine light is not on, there will be no codes thrown.....any ideas?

Bucking/hard start

Bucking could be cased by air bypass (behind the SC on plenum) sticking, just spray some WD40, cam sensor, DIS overheating (apply some Radio Shack heatsink compound under the DIS), or crank sensor going.
Hard Start could be caused by the cam sensor going bad, DIS overheating plus a host of other things. When was the last time you had a tune-up with fact plugs & wires?
The tach gets its signal from the cam sensor, to the DIS, and then to the gauge.
