swap in newer shifter?

I have a '90 SC automatic. The shift handle and base are worn and very dated. Can I swap in the shifter from a 1996 T-bird (i know the overdrive button wont work but i dont care) without too much trouble? I think the newer T-birds had the computer controlled transmission, but is the linkage the same and the distance the handle pulls the linkage? If I cant use a 1996-97 shifter, can i use a 94-95?

Thanks very much

I don't think it fits under the console the same. You'd probably have to swap the dash and center console, and door panels.

Why not get a B&M Hammer?

hey,
I took the center console out--im not worried about that--i just want to know if the later model shifter will fit where the old one was--is the screw pattern different--do i have to modify anything (linkages to the tranny etc)?

thanks
