Clutch pedal revisited

I have run a search and fund info on the prone to failure pedal to m/c rod bushing which just failed on my 89 5spd. I have already ordered the $5- part and my linkage is currently being held together with a pair of needle nose vicegrips. My question is how to gauge the wear on the pin coming off the pedal. should the pin have a taper on one side? mine looks to the best of my twisted painful view from under the dash as round on the bottom, tapered on the top with a notch around half the O/A diam. Is this normal or should I just remove the pedal and build up the pin with some meld round it out and drill and cotter pin it in. Also, is it that hard to remove this pedal as I can see a nut at the top of the arm that I can get to with a swivel and extensionany info appreciated----Brian
