Noise in rear?

I have a 91 AOD supercoupe. At highway speeds, 70 mph or higher, I hear a moaning noise coming from the rear, driver side. I remember reading somewhere, that there is a common wheel bearing problem in these cars. Has anyone ever expierenced this? If so, what was the cause? It's starting to drive me nuts.

Greg D-

This is probably wheel bearings on the rear. This is an easy job with air tools, or an extremely difficult one without. To get to the bearing, you have to swing the knuckle assembly away from the half shaft. Once you do this, the hub should have ZERO play in it with respect to the knuckle. Chances are, it will flop around a bit, indicating a bad bearing. Get this fixed QUICK, or you'll risk tearing up your hub, knuckle and half-shaft. The axle nut is difficult to remove and replace without a good air impact wrench. ALWAYS replace the axle nut with a new one from Ford (they're only a few bucks), and ALWAYS torque the new one down properly.

Good luck.
