I am looking at two s/c's on sunday. One is a 90 auto with recent top end with 106,000. shape of car looks good asking $2000, Second one is a 95 5sp with sun roof with 160,000 miles looks to be in good shape asking $2800.00 no motor work done. How many miles do these engines run before needing some work? Which would you buy and why? Any items to check out closely when I look at them. Thanks for the help. I am excited to have a s/c in the garage. Thanks

I'd say it depends on which style you like better. You'll be happier with which one you like better. I wanted an older one originally, but since I was just graduating college at that time, I couldn't afford to have everything done to an older one without having some other mode of transportation. If you have another car to run to parts stores or to get to work, then I would say go for the 90. But, the 95 is a more rare car and if you like 5 speeds, then go for the 95. How many miles an engine goes before needing things really depends on how it was cared for. My .02.

I like the older models myself 89-93, but the 95-5speed is a rare car and might be a better buy in the long run, The 90 has the top end done which is a plus, the 95 with 160K on it needs to get the top end done soon before the HG blows at some point. The big plus is the 95 is a 5-speed, both of mine are 5-speeds and I just love it. Where else and you get a car this size with a 5 speed. Makes it just fun to drive. I would buy the 95 and plan on doing the top end. Just my 2 cents worth.

Well I ended up buying the 95 5sp. Car is in excellant shape except cracking clear coat. I will paint it soon. Owner had stack of p/w from ford service, this car always went to ford for service only. Car is totally stock and everything works but the fog lights. Only down fall is 160,000 miles. I brought a ford mechanic with me and he said engine had to be rebuilt as it runs too good and no smoke at all. Thanks for the help, not sure if I will modify anything or keeo everything stock. It is nice to have a ford again.

Only down fall is 160,000 miles.

Just 'cause it has that kind of milage doesn't mean that it was rebuilt if it runs "that good". My 93 had over 225,000 on it, head gaskets were replaced at the 130,000 mark. It was running really well at the time it's life was ended by someone not paying attention. Good routine maintenance is very important to the running condition of any vehicle. Make sure you check the SC oil level on routine basis for long life & service. Change the antifreeze every couple of years and the head gaskets may never need changing.
Enjoy your SC. Happy motoring :D
