Intercoolers

Just wondering, were any of the GTPs, Lightnings or Cobras intercooled? How was it done without the ic and is it possible to mod an SC this way?

If under 10psi the intake temps won't be high enough to cause detonation. So you don't need an intercooler (GTP style). Cobra's and L's have liquid intercoolers under the blower and inside the intake.

You could remove your intercooler and make a plenum connecting the blower outlet to the lower intake. But you would need to reduce your blower rpm with a bigger pulley to kick it down from 13-15psi stock to something under 10 psi. Even at 10 psi and non intercooled the car would probably feel as strong if not stronger due to the streamlined intake, removed restrictions (no IC tubing or IC), and reduced parasitic losses from overdriving the blower. But you have no room to grow without an IC or some kind of liquid injection.

GTP guys use alcohol and water injection to reduce intake charges. It's relatively easy to install on any motor as opposed to designing a complex intercooler. And it'll let you get a few more psi out of it. I would think 12-13 psi is possible whereas without the injection you would be tripping the knock sensor like a mo-fo.

GTP's have also designed a liquid intercooler (similar to Cobra and L's) but it's mroe complicated and a few grand as opposed to the $300 or so for a cheap injection kit. Also seen a trick daddy air/air intercooler for the GTP which is an engineering marvel. Probably doesn't work ideal, but very neat. If Andy see's this post he can probably scoop up a pick.

And for the record there is one guy on the boards with no IC and a Snow kit installed. He's inbetween mods though so this is just playing around for him. I think he's been impressed with the set up so far though.

Thanks Micah, you certainly answered the question thoroughly. With the alky injection, there would also be room for a larger radiator, which would be nice. Thanks for the info.
