When I had stock 3.27 gears and a lock-up convertor I did see 28 mpg on a trip once. As it is now, I'm happy with my 15 mpg and mid-12 second timeslips :)

To think I was ticked off recently when I got 23 mpg! I used to get 26-27 but I need to do some things (o2 sensor, fuel filter). Guess I will quit cussing at my car!

I'm out on the highway all the time where the car gets 24-26 mpg. I don't do enough in-town driving to notice a difference.

On the highway with nonlockup converter, I can get 24 cruising at 85mph. City driving is close to 17.

I calculated mine last time, and it came out to 25mpg. Not bad, but i'd like to see if i can bump that up to 30mpg.. Yeah right, i'll keep on dreaming...

If you swap in a pumpkin with 2.73's into a mostly stock AOD car with a lockup convertor and cruise around 70 to 75 mph you will see around 30 mpg on the highway. Of course you will lose acceleration.

I logged the gas economy of my SC over the course of a few months, until it broke. This was on a stock '93 with 120k.

My average trip is a semi rural 15 minute drive, a few stops along the way. This results in a consistant 18+ mpg. On the highway, I would average between 24 to 28 mpg. The most I ever had was 32 mpg on my 2 hour trip back after purchasing the vehicle, 3 years and 30k ago.

I believe the MPG rating for these cars is 18 city 22 highway. It seems most fall within this range from what I've seen. Intake and exhaust Modifications to enhance airflow are said to improve mileage further.

I guess I'm one of the lucky few then. I am getting 30+ at cruise of about 80 - 85 MPH. In town, IF I can keep my foot out of it, :p I get around 23, but then again I've got a manual trans and no real mods.

Whenever I had a stock fuel setup, except for the pump, I was getting about 25MPG all around.

Now i'm getting about 15MPG with 42#ers without a tune. I'm sure it will go back to normal after a tune.

Randy N Connie

The lowest for mine was 2.5 mpg.And no thats not a mis-type..

I didn't think it was possible for a 3.8 with stock motor to get
that bad of milage with out a gas leak.
But that what I got after a tune one time.
Didn't foul the plugs, just black smoke
out the tail pipes when I would get on the throttle..:)

i have a 17.5 mile drive to work, and it's all on back roads...

I get ~260 mile to the tank with no OD, but I never let it get to the point where the fuel light comes on. This is after new fuel filter, pump, new O2's, fresh oil change & cleaned the air filter.
What size gas tank do the SC's have?

I just made a weekend run of about 400 miles. 30 around town and the other 370 on interstate running 85 to 95 mph. I was happy to see 22mpg. I had no idea it was that economical at those speeds. It gets around 18mpg just around town. AOD and 3.23 gears. Catch you later, Bob.

My '93 has a 15gal tank.92-97 OEM gas tanks are all the same size. I don't remember the exact size, but it's around 18 gallons. I believe the 89-91 gas tanks have a little bit more capacity.

Of course, none of this really matters for determining MPG since you should be using the number of gallons it took to fill up your tank, not the possible capacity.

We are officially tangent-bound....:)

http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/Used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2041/Act/usedcarreviewspecs/

Looks like my gauge may have been off a tad as I have never put more than 15.5 gallons in during a fillup with the gauge reading empty. Oh well, I'd rather it be that way than thinking I had an 18gal and in reality I had a 15 gal.

Also, true, when figuring gas mileage people need to fill the tank completely and then drive. Fill it up again completely and divide miles driven by gallons used to fill the second time.

In the theme of tangent-bound, I wouldn't trust any site's Thunderbird information that doesn't know the 89 is part of the same model run. Anyway, somebody with an 89-91 and a 92-97 owner's manual could state the fuel capactiy from the manual. I'll try to check my 92 manual when I get home from owrk, unless somebody posts the information before then.

I used to get consistent 30-31mpg in my bone stock '95 5 speed on all highway trips to NY. City used to be around 23-24. Now that I've changed to 3.27's I'm down to about 26 highway and 22 city. I never really checked on the Cougar, but I'd guess it was always around 26-27 highway all stock. My mileage in my AOD '93 blows goat as far as I'm concerned. Even with a full tune up and fairly easy driving I'm lucky to get over 20 city or highway. I'm pretty disappointed in that after such good mileage in my 5 speed cars. My old '92 base T-Bird used to get 30-31 on the highway when it was in full tune.

My red 90 5 speed got 29 mpg with a CAI and K&N filter setup as being the only real changes to the engine. Of course I babied her and didn't put my foot through the firewall either.
As for my titanium SC, I brought her back from Long Island to Albany with less than a 1/4 tank of gas and didn't even have to stop and put gas in her. Oh..wait...that's right, I was towing her back on a dolley! :D
Seriously though, my red SC gets awesome gas mileage and gets way better mileage than my wife's '03 Monte Carlo SS. I'm more than happy with my mileage with this car. I only hope the titanium SC gets comparable mileage when she's running...

When my drag racer was stock it would get 29-30 cruising on the interstate at 75. Now that it's fully moded it gets about 22 cruising. My 35th gets about 25 when cruising and the CTS with it's 3.6 VVT V6 burning regular gas shows 34 mpg on the in dash display cruising at 75.

My 89 SC 5-speed gets 31.4 on my last trip. running about 73-4 mph with the cruise control on.
I'm certain the lack of cats, a 2 1/2" exhaust and a K&N filter on the intake probably has something to do with it. I bought it this way and I know that the gentleman that did the mods told me the mileage jumped dramatically with the exhaust system change. The K&N only seemed to help a little on mileage, but it seemed to help improve power.

My commute just recently changed from 40 miles (20 highway) to 25 miles (12 highway), and my mileage dropped a good bit. I was getting 21-22, now I am getting 17-19. I looked at the math of it, and it seems to contradict my real-world results. Maybe the terrain (up grades, etc.) has an effect. Oh well. On long trips, the mileage is a lot better - maybe 24-25.

Not sure if this is typical but I just took a 2800 mile journey to New Mexico about 3 months ago in my 1990 SC. I kept up with every stop I made for gas and wrote down mileage for everything. I know it was very precise because I filled up in one place and nearly ran out of gas when I was due for another fill up. As soon as I got home I took out all my data and started crunching numbers. So here are my findings. On the interstate in a stock 1990 SC with a manual transmission driving 70 to 75 miles an hour I was getting 35 miles to the gallon! I checked and double checked so I know I am right. From what I am seeing this is not typical.

Drummer,
Don't panic about the 'good mileage', these cars are really suseptible to octane ratings of the fuel.
On 93 mine pulls down 31-33 open road, on 91 it only gets 28-29. I only put 90 in it once because I was afraid I would have to push it if I didn't and the mileage dropped even more! I tried hard not to use the boost with the lower grade fuel, I only travelled about 80 miles and found a 'BP' with 93 and filled the remaining 3/4 tank with that. No idea what the mileage was, but the fuel gage dropped awfully fast for that short amount of driving!

I seem to get between 19 and 23 MPG depending on how much highway driving I do. Im hoping it can get at least 25 if I did nothing but highway driving. But even if it doesn't, its not the reason I bought this car. Seriously, the handling is great on our twisty country roads in Georgia; like it was designed specifically for the roads where I live.

For all city and stock...it's not bad!!! Now you need to save a few pennies drop in a K&N intake filter and a Cat-Back exhaust system to free it up a little and power and gas mileage should go up!!! plus keep putting the 93 octane in it!!! You will be much happier with the way it runs!!!
