Ummm.....I know how all of this works because I worked at a machine shop and ported heads for about a year. I even got to do some work with a CNC machine. I did my first pair of 455SD heads and got 295cfm out of them, but thats a different story.
So going to an aluminum small runner V6 casting it was easy especially since no welding was done. It was a 2+2=4 thing on my part.
Also, I wasn't including the machine work.
Not doubting anyone.
People just often get the wrong impression. They see $200 and they think "hey wow, this other guy charging $1000 costs way too much." Often quick comments like that can be damaging to someone offering a good product at a good price.
For example, people have a cow over Coy Miller's price for heads. However, when you look at what you get for your $2340 it isn't as high as you might think.
New oversize seats installed,
New guides
SS valves
Titanium retainers (ever price these?)
springs
10 deg locks
Screw in studs and guideplates
Comp Hi - tech rockers (ever price those?)
This isn't a Coy Miller advertisement, but what I'm pointing out is that by the time you add up all the incidentals your heads are going to cost you a bunch of money. So if you are going to spend a lot of money on the heads, do you want to guess on the port work? That is the question of the hour.
People who port their own heads (if they have experience and knowledge) can save some cash, but when you add up the hours they spend and the parts they buy, often the "deal" isn't as great is it first seems.
And then of course if you don't know what you're doing then you can make things worse and even ruin the heads altogether but you guys already know about that.
I try to stay out of the head porting business. The work I do is all very customer oriented and I generally don't work on a car that I don't tune also. It's not that I port head to sell tunes, the point is that in my mind the car is not done until it is running exactly right. The end result is very important to me and if a little head porting fits into the program then that is just how it goes.
