Pinging Trouble

Howdy Ya'll,
I need an informed opinion on what could be causing pinging in my AOD equipped '89 SC with 85K original miles. I usually notice it when casually accelerating when it shifts into 3rd around 35-40 mph. If you apply more throttle it will go away, in other words, apparently no ping under heavy acceleration. Running 93 octane fuel and mechanically the car is stock and in decent daily driver condition. Lately it seems that the temp gauge reads low, just barely gets into the 'normal' range so it's reading colder than 'N'.
Not sure if this applies, I do know that the engine is operating at normal temps because I used an infrared temp guage and it reads around 195-200F at the top of the radiator when it's hot after a long cruise.
Here's what I think are some possibilities:
1- EGR system
2- Knock Sensor
3- Carbon Build-Up
4- Fuel Filter
5- Fuel Pressure Regulator
6- Bad Spark Plugs
The question is where do I start?
Any input would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
:)
