I am going to finally get rid of my heavy stock seats. Summit has a deal on a seat with a cover for $61 each you also have to buy the tracks for like $22 a set. Has anyone used these? I want really lite, really cheap. Any sugestions would be a help. Tim:D

Check out the Kirkey Aluminum Race Seats with the black padded covers. They are like $85 each or something. I've ridden in an SC with those and they aren't bad. I could live with them.

that depends on what you want. If you want adjustability im sure you can modify the stock mounts to work with a set of kirkey seats which are actually quite comfortable ;)

I just want to make sure I get rid of all the weight and power adjusters. Side windows after that.

Be aware that your "universal" sliders will NOT fit without a significant amount of fabbing. You are better off to find a set of manual 97 tracks and adapt your seats to that. If you want cheap and lightweight seats that are actually comfortable, go to a junkyard and check out the imports. ;)

I've got those plastic seats in my drag racer. I ended up using the stock power seat tracks and a sheet of aluminum to mount the seats on. And yes they take a good deal of fabrication to get them to fit. The universal mounting tracks they supply will indeed take some work to fit. The seats are actually quite comfortable with enough padding. I use the supplied covers and a sheepskin cover.

Gotta say I agree. VW, Mitsu, Suby, and probably more all have brand name seats like Recaro's in some of their models. The VW GLI would be a softer seat probably, the Recaros in my rice rocket are VERY stiff...they don't even have a recliner, you have to manually roll the seat =(

I vote against he Kirkey's....They have some really goofy side bolsters that restrict your movement. I mean, they were made to go fast and turn left in. Not to mention they will look like dirt track seats in an SC.

Ebay has some nice deals on reclinable racing seats. You can routinely pick some up for $300ish to your door. If you can stand looking at an APC logo...their seats actually look nice.

And who else drives your car? YOu could just mount them in one position you know.

A set of cloth 1g Mitsubishi Eclipse seats weigh in at around 25lbs each.. VERY comfortable and you could probably fit em onto a set of 97 manual tracks if you are creative.. Plus you can get a used set for $30 (as i did to put in my work truck) Just a thought..

I use the plastic Jazz seats in the racecar with the seat covers and they are pretty comfortable. I just bought a long piece of that 90 degree aluminum bar stock then cut four pieces, drilled holes at the height I wanted, then put a bolt through it. It looks nice and it's light at about 10lbs per seat.

you are correct.. the virsion you are talking about are made for dirt track cars.

ive sat in one of these seats (cousin has a 'modified' dirt track car) and those bid side pieces would definetely be annoying in a street car.

What i was talking about it is this seat.

i agree about the apc seats...i sat in a set at a Pep Boys that were actually quite comfortable.. they were black "leather" and i dont recall seeing a apc logo on them.:o

I think I will do a little bone yard looking before I order any seats. Weight is the big thing. I want to get rid of the seats, the power set up and all. I didnt know you could get manual seats in a bird. Anybody have a line I where I can get manual sliders? I would pay for them plus any shipping. That will make the whole deal a lot easier. :D We dont have any really good bone yards around here everything gets crushed right away.

Tim, when I was looking for seats I spent a few days going to all the best places around the state. I did get a set of race seats, but two things made me take them back. 1] you were not going to drive anywhere for more than 10 miles without needing a butt rub...2] every seat that was even close to working made it next to majic to get into the car. Sure if I drop 40 lbs I might fit a little better. You sat in my car, you know how hard it is to get into it with the stock seats, now think about it if you had to get over those side braces on the race seats...
Take XR7's lead hit the junkers in the yard, less $$$$$$ and better sitting for your backside.....Rich

The big issue is getting sliders that work. I may search arround for some light seats that have padding. I still have to bolt them to a slider that works. Randy no money for fancy Blowers, seats are cheap!

Scott, YOU can also live w/o windshield wipers, windshield moulding, hood latch, & any other weight induced ET robbing device in the car.

hey my windshield has a molding and i put the wiper cowl back on. I don't have the linkage/arms/motor though. who needs a hood latch? I have pins and they work better and I trust them.

I suppose I since I'm young (23) the seats don't have to be as comfortable for me as some of you may require. I'm sure I'll regret it in the future as I start having back pain and kidney failure, but for now I'll be fine.

I am wondering if Nick just drilled holes in the floor and mounted the seats stationary or what? I mean no one has ridden in my backseat in almost a year, but it would be nice to at least be able to slide the seats forward so someone could squeeze in the back if it was absolutely necessary.

How much do manual LX seats weigh compared to the powered ones?

tim

I have the dealers sales books for '89 Cougar. In the Cougar, a manual drivers seat wasn't even offered in '89. Manual pass. seat was avail. Dunno if it was avail. for the LX or not. Also dunno about other model years. You might be able to find something that would work, from one of the cheap Ford lines.

The manual seat track was available in 96 and 97 but I believe most LX's even the V6's came with at least the power drivers seat option. Jason Marsh found one and used it to mount his seats. It would be the easiest way since it fits the factory bolt holes in the floor pan. All you have to do is bolt the new seat to these tracks, and put the 4 bolts back in the floor. Its a lot less hassle than drilling new holes, and shimming the mounts to level the seat. I mean yeah I could do it that way too, but I'd prefer to find a drivers side manual track also. I can just yank my seat off my passenger side track.

I wander if the manual driver's seat track is still available threw Ford. I bet its long since been discontinued though :(.

Wow....I need to find what the saturn redline seats look like. Those seats I posted are bolstered really tight, I'm 6'4" and 210lbs and they fit me like a glove, I would think if you're "fatter" you wouldn't have a good time.

Micahdogg
01-03-2006, 01:11 PM
Scott, Nick just drilled through the floor and mounted some bent aluminum strap for the brackets. YOu should take the care to make sure you don't drill into the gas tank. Because, if you do...you'll get gas fumes in the car. And then when your buddy wants to light up a cigarette, it will make you nervous.

Just went down to the junkyard and found an 90 LX. It had manual drivers and passengers seats in great shape. The only crappy thing is that the seats are red and my interior is black. I want to weigh the SC seats and then compare to the LX seats. I guess I will use seat covers until I figure out some racing seats or find black LX ones. I guess I lucked out today!:D

If you ever want to sell the drivers side seat track I call first dibs! Or if you find another driver side manual seat track could you snag it for me and I'll gladly pay you for it. I have been looking for a long time for one but have had no luck.

My son is going to start working at the junkyard and I go down every week or two looking for spare SC parts. So, I will tell him and I also will look for you and if i find one I will get it and send it to you. The whole seat cost me $22.99. Let me know if you find one just so I am not looking when you don't need one.

I did the drivers side swap. The stock SC seat weighs 57.5lbs and the LX seat weighs 46.5 pounds. I lost 22lbs total and I find the LX seats more comfortable. I had 2 other people sit in the car and they agreed that the LX seats were better and the red does not look all that bad with the black. I will most likely go with a seat cover for now.

What is usually used on these cars as seat belts or buckles if a race seat is installed. Is the stock buckle just being bolted on the side of the seat by drillin holes?

I would understand what to use if a car had a roll cage (5pt. harness), but I don't have one.

Mike Puckett
01-26-2006, 09:30 AM
On mine, I use the stock seat belt on the passenger side threaded thru the openings in the new seat and I have a G-Force 5 point cam-lock on the drivers side. I use the stock mounting locations for it with no real problem except for the right shoulder belt. I bolt it to the same spot as the right lap belt using the stock location. That's really a no-no though as the shoulder belt should not be mounted more than 4" lower than your shoulder due to possible spinal compression upon an impact. I keep it slack though so hopefully it wouldn't be a problem. The tech inspector at the track has never said anything about it.
