How bad is this?

Its possible but not likely to be losing fluid due to a torn boot. Mine was torn to ~~~~ and my shifter was very sloppy. I put a ripper in there and love it to death would recommend it to every 5-speed owner.
There are seals that can go bad in a 5-speed that may be leaking. Get under the car and see if its dripping below. You can also crack the case if you bottom the car out hard enough. Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the info.
The car grinds going into 3rd, and my shifter feels pretty loose so I thought I'd take a look and make sure none of the screws were missing that hold the shifter on. There was tranny fluid on the rubber cover over the shifter. I'm hoping it's not the syncros. I'm going to check the bottom of the car tomorrow. Thought I would put some Syncromax in it also.
