tailhousing info needed

I know my tailhousing has a giant crack, and fluid drips out. I have a replacement coming from Rod and just waiting for time to go get it from him. In the meantime, I try to take the car slowly around the block once a month to keep it running good, charged, and shake down any new leaks. Well today on my weekly trip chugging along at 20 MPH something strange happened. It shifted and the car took off! I turned on to a faster road and got it to shift all the way to overdrive! I was excited to be flying in a bird again. But then the fluid REALLY started coming out and smoking off the exhaust, so I got back on the side street and came home. But it never shifted again, now its back to the same old first gear only thing.
All this longwindedness is to ask, what kind of pressure is inside the tailhousing? and does it vary depending on what gear your in or by RPM? Thanks. :)
