Looking for a different knob for my 92. Are all shift knob thread patterns pretty much the same? Anyone recommend a comfortable one that's a little smaller. I've been looking at the B&M T-handle actually. Also how about the shift boots, mine's getting kinda nasty looking. Will any old Autozone boot fit? Thanks...still kinda new to the 5-speed parts.

Take your handle off and walk through a u-pull-it yard and find what you like. Or atleast get an idea. I found a ball off a Toyota Tercel (yeah my car has rice) that I liked. I pulled the center sticky off and found a Ford Sticky I havent put on yet. Its a little smaller than a golfball.
Add it to a knuckle bustin short throw like this and you have instant shift.

I dunno about all shiftknobs; but i got one from the local auto parts store; made by eichabhn(sp?). It goes onto your current threaded shifter shaft; and has set screws to secure it, which makes it virtually universal.I would assume most shift knobs are designed like this. In any case, this knob seems to be designed for my hand; I'll be transferring it over to the new T5 when that is all set up.

You've got the same interior as me...pretty rare from what I've seen. Other than mine, I've only seen one other one like it.

There are a bunch of different thread patterns for shift knobs. Only one will work for SC's.
I have a Hurst T-handle that fits my hand very well. If you angle it slightly clockwise, a T-handle will help with your 2-3 shift.

I have a 99-04 mustang GT leather shift knob in my 35th. Its feels really good in my hand and is easier to grip then a stock shift knob in my opinion.

apperantly i didn't make myself clear enough. The hole in the bottom of this shift knob is larger than the threaded rod. It slips over the threaded rod, and has 3 set screws that you tighten down onto the shaft. this secures the shift knob, no matter the thead pitch or shaft diameter. It also has a rubber sleve that you put over the shaft to give the set screws something to dig into without damaging your threads in case you ever want to switch to another shift knob.

Thats correct darkstar_one. All the current mustang shift knobs will just thread right on.

i have one off of an 05 GT as well, same thread, just had to dremel off some plastic on the bottom to get it to thread on, although this shift knob is in my Stude now...

So theoretically any aftermarket shift knob for a newer Mustang would work then...we talking 99-04 or 05+ or what?

79-present unless Ford did something funny between years 79-86. If thats the case then 87-present will work just fine.

I have a B&M T-handle much like Marks Hurst T-handle. Mine had standard thread so I had to wrap a ~~~~ load of pipe thread tape around the threads on the shifter and then use a liberal amount of red locktite. I set it up how I wanted, and let it dry over night. It hasn't moved in 3 years.
I think marks is a metric thread so it went on and then he snugged up the lower bolt and it was good to go.
If you get a T-handle, make sure you order a metric thread.
I like the t-handle because all the mustang knobs stick up too high, the T-Handle has no height, so it makes the shifter lower, and I have a ripper base where it bolts to the tranny. I like the t-handle much better than that stock knob. I really like short (height wise) shifters and the T-handle is perfect. Plus I just hit it with the palm of my hand and it makes the 2-3 shift nicely.
I'll let you see mine as so as I get my SC back from the exhaust shop.

I don't even see a metric thread listed for the B&M

Yep, Metric thread. I forget the size, but Hurst lists 16mm x 1.5 thread. 1.5 WHAT, I don't know, but it's one & a half of somethin'!!!! There is a special Jam Nut under the Hurst shifter, that tightens up against the bottom of the T-handle.

The shorter the total shifter height, the shorter the throw. The T-handle makes the short throw Ripper, even shorter.

1.5 is the thread pitch.

The correct Ford metric thread is: 12mm x 1.75
The 16mm x 1.5 thread is for Camaro / Firebird

Now this is a short throw. Put this atop a ripper and the San Andreas Fault doesnt shift this well..........
I removed the top half with the compression fitting or whatever you call the rubber in it and had the machine shop re-thread it for $15. Throw on the Toyota Tercel Knob and its Knuckle Bustin Short Throws.

Dahoopd, yours is to short for my likings, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it just that I prefer a taller shifter cause its easier to grab ahold of and shift. I could see myself busting my Knuckles on the ashtray in your car.

Actually its not bad. You can only shift as far as it will take you. My hand doesnt even get close to the ash tray. Its true about the likings, my ex wife and a buddy both drove my car (when it ran) and neither liked it. They said it shifts to fast and the movement is too short.....lol
They may as well drive a dump truck if they want 4 foot arm movements.
As for Jeffs original post. The knob I got is plastic on the inside. It rethreaded itself when I put it on. You literally have to use both hands to get the knob on and off. I like the smaller knob because I only shift with three fingers. Just preferance.
