Cooling problems?

Car overheats really quick in stop and go traffic and I can smell antifreeze through the air vents when the heat is turned on. The heat works really well, still hot. The car is an '89 5-speed. Motor was replaced and has only 50,000 miles on so I'm hoping the HG gremlin hasn't gotten me?!?!?

Check the fan operation

If the cooling fan doesn't work you will definitely overheat in stop-n-go traffic. Does the electric fan kick on if you turn on the AC?

Do a search here on "cooling fan" and you will find all kinds of info for testing and modifying to get better cooling...

Heater core

sounds to me like your heater core is leaking....if you can smell it through the vents ...carpet may be wet on pasenger side from leak ....heater core is real pain to replace
but you can loop the hoses on the heater core @ firewall and see if that fixes the problem or try quick fix wih a bottle of stop leak ...but that is just borrowed time in most cases ....dave
