What options do I have to replace this steering rack? Should I get it rebuilt and by who? Or does someone have one in tip top condition they would want to sell?
Denis
Just finished the inventory of what needs to be done on the bird. Damn! Now I need to sell the Lightning to get all this done...

About 4 years ago I purchased a rack off Ed. I had to hand over my old core when it was out. I can't remember the price, but was good or I wouldn't have gone that way. Hope that helps some.

Denis, a Ford reman. rack assy. is $353.10 + taxes, with your old one back for an exchange. I'd suggest trying Brian Pennell, to see if he has a good used part. Same one for all years of MN-12.
cheers

Hi Ed,
I would really like to find a good used one but my concern is with all the work with the install, finding out that it leaks or has a bunch of free play. But, no doubt, its worth investigating. How do I contact Brian?
If I can't find a good used one, I will be talking to you.
Thanks,
Den

Denis,
Brian's contact info here.....

He will have several from which to choose. I recommend doing some research wrt to how to "test", both physically and visually, a rack when it's off the car before visiting Brian's SC Part's Palace.
But you're right, the install and alignment costs are the same for a new or used rack. $400 and change guarantees the part is perfect.
I also recommend compliling a list of other pieces you need (trim, knobs, etc.) before you go. As you can see in the photos, Brian's "warehouse" has everything you need for your SC. I've personally dealt with Brian and he is a stand up guy. I'm doing up my list now for a visit to his place next month.

I have a used rack. 45 years old but extremely well maintained. Very little play, either left or right. Sold without warranty, but I know you won't be dissappointed. Pension benefits included. If treated well, it makes a mean chicken caccatorie. :)

Hey Hosehead,
If the pension benefits run out and the chicken dish isn't right for me, will you take this classic (over 20 years qualifies as a classic) rack back?
If so, I might be interested to bolt it on to see how it performs.;)
