Check Engine Light

My check engine light has been intermittently coming on while im driving. The engine was just rebuilt, i figure its just a sensor as it hasnt affected the way it drives and runs. What are the reasons it comes on, should i be worried, and please tell me there is a way to check what it means without having to go to the dealership. Thanks in advance. Also im sure its probably unrelated, but the red brake light thats comes on when the ebrake is pulled is also intermittently coming, although it is independant of the check engine light. Thanks in advance.

You can get a code scanner to check the codes.

Itermittant check engine light can be anything, so the code should be stored. That will help you.

In addition; you can also drive to autozone and have them run a diagnostic to find the codes. This is free, and you might be able to order the needed part at that time.
