Transmission Temperatures 4R70W

Maybe someone who knows alot about automatic transmissions or has a trans temp gauge can answer this one...

What driving conditions cause the highest and lowest transmission temps in a 4R70W automatic transmission?

Cruising at high speed in OD?
Driving around town up to 45 MPH (lots of stops and starts)?
A mixture of around town (stops and starts) and brief hops onto and off of sections of highway (up to 75MPH)?

It's different from vehicle to vehicle. Trucks tend to run the warmest because of the weight, but a car with a really high stall converter and a stock cooler will easily push the 250 mark around town. You want the transmission to operate below 180 and above 100.

Thanks for the info! What happens if you run an automatic trans. at lower than 100 degrees?

At less than 100 degrees the computer thinks the transmission is not warm and lockup will not operate. Have you ever taken off early on a cold morning and lockup didn't work at first? That is why.

According to my gauge, mine spends most of its time between 165-180, but ambient temperature makes a huge difference, too.
