View Full Version : buying my 1st SC, but parents are being stupid

so my parents dont think i should buy the 35th off of shane:( ...they keep bringing up that it's not worth it and everything. they even printed off a few prices (KBB, and edmunds) showing that its worth $1500 in good condition, and so they keep telling me not to buy it. i do like the car, and i want it. and i know that shane would love it if i bought it, especially cuz he'd still be able to do the work on it himself still. they just dont want me to buy it cuz they dont think its worth what he is asking...from what i've read on here, most people sell their SC's for more than that, and i was just wanting to know what other people think. i'm still planning on buying it,:p but i just want other opinions from people who actually love these cars, and not just my parents who dont care about them.

How much is Shane asking for the car ?

How much was Shane asking for it again, I forgot? The prices listed in the used car books are subject to car condition. Sometimes those prices are acurate and sometimes they aren't. Your idea of what the car is worth and their idea are probably at opposite ends of the spectrum.

It comes down to if you want it and if you want to pay what he wants to get out of it. If he throws in free mechanical service agreement with the car, you can't beat that.

I just looked at the pics and they're right. It's not worth that much at all. I've seen SC's go for a grand on Ebay recently. Think of yourself as a dealer when buying cars. Start from trade in and work from there. No carpet, No headlights, no interior. If that car was at auction it would go for 300 dollars.

Most of the story is left out here. First off, yes it does have head lights, yes it does have interior, and yes it does have carpet. It also has 36k on the motor. Its absolutely rust free, body is near perfect, everything on it works. Only real thing it needs will be tires before winter which this car has never seen a winter before :(.

Yes David, free mechanical service agreement is of course added in lol! She is my girl friend so why wouldn't it be? Hell I dont charge anything to my friends whenever I work on their cars either.

What else is there to know? It has 196K miles on it and it's a 1990. What makes the car worth more then blue book or edmunds? So it has no rust and is in great condition. Blue book has a classification for that. It's called "Excellent" condition. Select excellent for a 196K mile SC and what do you get? 1245.00

Not 2600. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to sucker your Gf into paying double of what your car is worth.

It is 1 of approximately 3,300 (35th Anny Edition). There aren't a whole lot of them left.

To that, I say go find a really nice 35th anniversary car with a 36K mile engine for the blue book prices. Its not easy to do. We arent talking taurus's or Cavaliers here. The blue book doesnt take near enough into account when pricing an SC, let alone a special one like a 35th or a 95 5 speed, and selling prices are all over the place. The best thing for an SC enthusiast is to find a seller that prices his car at blue book, because you know your getting a good deal :) And if they are moving in together, dont worry, he will be paying plenty for that car....:D

sounds like your parents have no sense of style... :p

I'd go for it...and take good care of it so it will last..

i bought my 95 SC about 4-5 weeks ago and have fallen in love with the car..

I'm looking at sink'n 9k into it pretty soon.. paint, mods, new drivetrain...and seat covers/carpet..

Is this a joke? ....I see it grew headlights after it's bath...I mean it would be a great project for you two to do together..... you know... lots of fun and a learning process for her too...but in the mean time why not help the younglady find a nice daily driver for that price to use while you do..then when its complete let her drive it. I mean the majority of these cars that are left out there are pretty much project cars of one sort or another... but selling someone you care about a car in as much need as this one apparently has, from what I can see, makes me scratch my head and I can certainly see her parents concerns.

Scott Long

Put the head lights in it, and a carpet kit (even without sound deadener to add weight, I'd just put some dynamat around the trans tunnel), and maybe throw the back seat back in it or fab up a rear seat delete out of sheet metal or light wood and then carpet to match.

If the car is a rust free 35th 5-speed w/ glossy paint, and has a lower mileage engine in it, its worth probably more than he is asking. Figure some people might say well the original interior is out of it so its not worth it to them, but if you like the racing seats and the car is sound (good brakes, shocks, front end is tight, tie rods good, ball joints good, wheel bearings tight, clutch in good condition) I'd say in the shape its in anywhere from $2200-2800 is reasonable.

I own three of these cars and I have worked on many with high mileage. My daily driver has 242k miles on it and its on its original engine and only had to change 1 fuel pump, 1 water pump, 1 set of head gaskets, and a junkyard trans a few years ago. I change the plugs and wires, and coolant every year. Its all about how these cars are mainted. I bought this car with 163k on it for $3000 and it had a smashed trunk like from getting hit by a lifted ranger. I had to go buy a new trunk lid and a set of tail lights and install it myself and repaint the car. My car even has rust on the rockers so I'll have to have them rebuilt in the next year or so if I decide to keep this car any longer. I love SC's and I'd be more concerned about a solid body than the mileage on the car if its been well maintained and I know Shane would take care of any problems as soon as they arise.

I also know he is very enthusiastic about 35th's since he had to travel to find a rust free one after his first one was wrecked. I think that if not for trying to get the race car going he'd keep this one but at least if you buy it he can still work on it and drive it and help guide you with what modifications to do on it.

I sold my 92 5-speed to my girlfriend also. Well we put $500 on the title because the DMV wanted to charge sales tax. So they got their $30 dollars plus plate fees. In reality I "gave" it to her. But if I was going to sell it I'd hope she would buy it.

If you are old enough to move out on your own your parent's should let you choose what kind of car you want. Unless you are borrowing the money from them or having them pay for it, they should only give you advice but you are free to decide for yourself.

I wish you two the best of luck moving in together. I've been in that boat for almost 4 years now and its been a real learning experience. Take things slow. I just figure when Jen and I get married at least we won't have the arguments and stuff that most people go through when they first move in together since we've already moved past that. And I let her decorate the apt., choose the bedroom stuff, etc... Oh well enough about that....

I will personally vouch for Shane's SC and if I did have an extra $2500 laying around to bring home another car I'd buy Shane's SC and wouldn't flinch. If that means anything to you. I've been an SC owner for 7 years and I've really watched these cars closely. I know all the problems to watch out for and what not. I've also seen some GREAT advances in performance and I am glad I've been involved with these cars. Also this club has been invaluable for info on how to fix and modify these cars. Without this club I'd have probably never even bought my first SC. I was on here before I owned the car.

I sold my 35th, 5-speed for $5000 last year. The guy I sold it to loves it and has had no problems with it. As before stated, if you like the car, get it. Your parents wont be driving it, you will. Make sure you read some of the posts on here so you know the problem areas of these cars; believe me they have their share, But I am on my 4th SC and even though I've had problems with all of them, I still love the things. Once you get one you will understand why they have the following that they do.

First off are you 15 or 16 years old? You obviously don’t know much about SC's or what they are worth so next time a look around before you open your mouth. Just for an example of your almighty KBB I took the pleasure of looking up what a 1993 Mustang Cobra in excellent condition and only 10k miles on the car is worth. Well KBB says in excellent condition its worth a whopping $5,020 at most. A car like that wont go for anything less then $15-20k and if you tried to offer someone KBB's price for it I sure hope the owner of such car punch you in your face, kick you in your balls and throw you right off their property all while laughing in your face. If you haven't gotten the point yet KBB is flawed and with a car like a 35th 5spd or any SC for that matter the KBB shouldn't be fallowed. You can take from this what you want.

BTW, I have not done a single thing to my girl friend that would make me feel ashamed of myself. I have no respect for people like you that treat others with the utmost disrespect that you have with me. If anyone needs to be ashamed it’s you for being such a dumb azz in the first place.

ok...well...i understand that SC's have their fair share of problems, but most cars do anyways. (i watched my ex's, seans, break down and kill itself right in front of us) and i mean, i wouldnt mind looking for an older civic, or prelude or something, but see, the main thing is...shane doesnt know how to work on them like he does with the SC, so that'd be costing me so much money if something gets all screwey with one of them since i'd have to take it to a shop. i mean, i dont mind giving shane the money for the car, it was his investment at one point in time, and i just think it's only fair for me to pay him for it, even tho i do see where some of you guys are saying he could/should just give it to me. i do understand, that KBB and what not DONT take things like the 35th anny stuff into account, now can you hardly ever trust those things anyways with ANY car. i mean, shane told me he has all the headlight parts, and he'll fix the strutrod bushing for me, and stick ALL of the interior back in, including the original seats (both front, and the back) in it, as well as carpet. he even said he'd stick some other part in it (i 4get what it is called again  ) that he's got layin around the garage. yea, i do see where my folks may be tryin to look out for me in my best interest, but like scott said, they arent gonna be the ones driving it....and by me moving out of their house, i am on my own with EVERYTHING...they arent helping me out with anything at all, school, rent, NOTHING. and so therefore i'm not using any of their money to even buy the car with...everything is stuff that i have either earned or was given and saved up. and it def. helps me that shane is so into these cars, that he's gonna baby it and everything, even tho technically it wouldnt be his anymore. i've seen and heard of how many people have shown interest in the 35th when he put it up for sale, and how none of them could afford it. i'm just glad tho, that i'm managing to get a decent looking and running car. i'm just thankful that if for whatever reason, shane cant do something to fix the car...there are plenty of people to ask and to get advice from. i've been randomly browsing the forums for a few months now, but i just joined. shane convinced me to since i decided i was gonna buy the car. it's just that i've read a few places *a teenager shouldnt have an SC* or *SC's arent good daily drivers* and all sorts of other negative things, i just wanted to see if people thought the same, or different about this car, cuz i know many people have heard about it, or know about it, or SOMEthing...but i think i can handle it...i have driven it before too, and its no prob at all...even tho the shifting in it is a little bit different than the shifting in the saturn i drive for now...but at least i already know how to drive a 5 speed!!! :D

Going from a Saturn to an SC.......

HMMMMMMM........

Be very careful......

These cars, especially the 5-speeds, can be fun to drive.....

But they can be quite a handfull if you are not use to driving a 4000 pound torque monster.....

I am sure Shane will be teaching you the finer points of driving an SC......;)

Having free competent mechanical help is a plus on these cars.....

I can answer this one hehe. I can put her on my insurance and have the 35th setup still like how I had it when I drove it. I had it setup for limited milage (7500 a year) and at full coverage its around $45 a month.

I say go for it..With a relatively low mile engine and Free mechanical work.....Its a no brainer.

Sean, I can understand your point of view. But just because someone has a Supercoupe, doesn't mean they need to autocross it, race it at the strip or even modify it at all. She wouldn't even have to drive it fast on the street.

I've done some mods on mine, but I rarely break the speed limit. It is just a fun car to drive and very comfortable with a great ride. I think she'll enjoy it a lot more than a crackerjack box import or something like that.

I'm not trying to start any arguments here, and I don't really have much to add to this thread, but I do think that this was almost totally uncalled for. I concur that he was out of line tell you that you should be ashamed of yourself, but I think that might have been a bit much...

but i just want other opinions from people...

She asked his opinion...he gave it. Then radium flames him for being a noob, you tell him he OBVIOUSLY doesn't know much about supercoupes.

Were you born with full schematics and diagrams of SC's engrained in your brain, as well as the selling price of all models and years? We all have to start somewhere. Look at his post count! i'ld be willing to bet that he doesn't know much, but he was asked his opinion and he is entitled to it. Personally, just looking at those pics I wouldn't pay 2,500 for it either, even if it is a 35th 5-speed. Some people see the value, and will pay more because of the rarity of a car. Others don't see that value, and can't justify the inflated price. Some people buy cars because parts are cheap, others because it's gets good gas mileage, others because the car will "last forever"; whatever floats your boat...

There is an actuive thread in the Non-Technical section entitled "this is an example why we get little respect" ( http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79816 ). For anyone that hasn't followed this thread, in it is discussed how some people didn't feel wecome at the TCCoA website, because a few people would belittle, and "bully" people asking stupid questions or no0bs. The whole issue is that the MN12 platform is rare, and no longer in production. Because of this, the platform owners should try to keep lines of communication open, and new thoughts and innovative ideas flowing. Alienating certain people is not helpful in the least.

Never say never! It's one hell of a rush, and its safer than racing it down the street. Plus its addictive and you start trying your hardest to get a faster slip each time and then when you get your driving down perfect and max out your combo, you start throwing more and more parts at it to make it faster. Its a disease and you'll catch it soon if you hang around long enough. My girlfriend is anxious to make her first run down the track.

If we make it to the shootout I'll introduce you Jen, you two girls can line up the guys and race them. Shane and I will just watch and laugh.

It’s not pointless for her to have my 35th at all. It’s a very good and reliable car that I would trust to take anywhere and it not leave me stranded. Like David said its not a requirement that she'll be forced to race it just because she owns it but rather she can do what she wants with it. So that means if she wants to drive to work and back only with it then more power to her. Sean I want her to have it because I know it will be a good reliable car for her not that I just want to keep an eye on it. I gave you plenty of opportunities to buy my 35th but you could never come up with the money. So don’t be sore about it then because she is buying it and not you. If she was not buying it I'd still offer it to you because I know you are in need of a car.

Thats sounds like a great idea Scott. Just last night I was telling her how I have two 3.27 trac loc diffs sitting in my garage that I was going to sell but I said to her that I would put one of them in the 35th for her for the hell of it so it would be faster. She seemed to like the idea too  :D

sean...i know that you may be bitter that we broke up (which you claim i was the biggest mistake of your life, but thats beside the point, i *broke your heart, literally* as you said) and that i started dating shane. that was never my intention, honestly...but things change. i guess u must have missed my post where i said i drove the 35th. i wanted to, i ASKED to drive it! and shane took me for a drive in it before, and he screwed around in it....more than you ever did with your cars...and honestly, i wasnt scared AT ALL. he actually knows how to control a car, unlike you, who just lets it go and you gain control back whenever....i didnt like how you did that, because of the fact that you cant control it yourself! and just bc i would have the car, doesnt mean that i wanna race it...MAYBE, (very unlikely tho...) i could possibly end up down the road, doing some stuff that these guys like to do, but who knows....yea, so maybe shane does feel a whole lot better about me getting his car so he can keep his eye on it...same if you got it. but since i'm going to need a car, and i have the money for the 35th (which you could never save up more than $700 if u were lucky while we were dating), and you DONT have the money, why should shane bother waiting around for you or some1 else to buy it, only to find that they cant come up with all the money for one reason or another...then he's still stuck with it. i have the money for it, so i'm going to buy it. i am SO glad that i'm with shane now, rather than you. not only does he treat me with the utmost respect and like an actuall girlfriend. i feel comfortable with him, whether its just me and him sitting around talking, or if he's driving over 100 mph in the car....i dont get scared when i'm with him!

that is ONE THING you could NEVER make me feel...COMFORTABLE. so be jealous all you want, that not only did i *steal* your best friend...but i am also *stealing* the car you wanted from you:D yea, well, i try my best to ruin your life. too bad i couldnt ever put you thru the ~~~~ you put me thru...treat you how you CONTINUED to treat me for well over a year, yet you always said you would change...HA, yea right. so maybe you and kayli are *perfect* together...thats what you always told me...then you go and cheat on me, yet tell me i better not EVER cheat on you....you treated me great for the first 6 months or so....i'm just waiting to see what happens with you and her once you hit the 6 month, or maybe even 1 year mark. just so i can LAUGH at you. i hope you have a horrible life sean....i'm just SO glad that i finally found someone who i actually can feel great with and not like a piece of trash that is getting used for sex and not much else. i felt like your lil piece of a$$...if i ever said no, about ANYTHING, you had a hissy fit...and said i was too controlling over you? OK...i mean...when you spend more time with your friends, and only see your girlfriend at school, thats not cool. i can understand you want to spend time with your guy friends, but when you are with them from 7-3am, and hardly EVERY with me, and dont wanna talk on the phone, yea, something is wrong. i dont get treated like complete poo now, and i actually feel like a freaking human being. so what if i get the 35th...not only is shane getting to keep an eye out on it, but i'll still have a car that isnt a complete POS like all yours have been. plus, by me buying it, i can actually say i have earned something of my own. granted you used to have to pay for quite a bit more than me...i am pulling away from my parents, i am getting out on my own, doing my own things FOR ME. granted u busted up your hand from that accident, even before then...when you lost your job at SNS, you didnt even care to find and actually get hired, at another one...wendys wanted you back, and you were going to, but you never followed thru. you have no responsibility, and i hope that when you have to pay for yourself to live, whether with your mom, or out on your own, i HOPE that you fall right on your a$$. but ya know what...i really need to stop ranting...even tho there is PLENTY MORE i could go on and on forever about...i'm not going to...i dont need to deal with you anymore, and i'm sure i wont, especially after this. thats ok...i am over 100% MORE THAN HAPPY with shane, and i know i wont ever have to worry about him cheating on me like you did....yea, and if i ever cheated on you, u'd break up with me in a second...HA! boy was i dumb...oh well, i dont really care anymore. i dont care about you sean...nor will i ever again. i'm glad that you introduced me to shane tho, that is the one and only thing i DO thank you for...for i have actually found someone who can REALLY show me what true love is like. if you have a problem with it, i dont care, SUCK IT UP! you are 18 years old...AN ADULT! i love him sean, and if you dont like it....well...i cant say it on here, but thats quite alright, use your imagination to fill that in.

i'm getting the 35th...we'll see what happens at the shootout...but yea....thats what that part is called...the differential...or whatever :p i dont care if he puts it in...meh, more for me i guess. and if i dont wanna race it, then i wouldnt have a prob with shane doing it here and there since that snow plow of his isnt going anywhere quite right now...:p (sorry babe!:( ) and scott...you can introduce me to her if we meet up...but i still dont think you'll be seeing me on the strip...at least not this year :p

ok...so i think i'm done, basically hijacked my own thread...nice...:D

Then radium flames him for being a noob

I'm not sure how long you've had your SC, but when I first registered on this site 3 years ago, the last thing I would have thought of was making my first post telling someone they shouldn't buy a car. Why? Because at the time I knew very little about the SC and I was in no position to give out that kind of advice or opinion.

Now as it was his very first post on the site, unless he has had several years of owning an SC and knows their worth (or lack of   ) then I think he is not qualified to give her an opinion on whether she should buy it or not. He hasn't posted since then to prove otherwise, so........

I wasn't trying to be rude to him or make him feel unwelcome. He's posted on some other threads, so I think he'll stick around.

Just to get this thread back on topic so it doesn't die, Lyndsay is buying the 35th from me and here soon on the day I put the carpet, back seat, and quarter panels back in it I'll install a 3.27 trac loc rear in it at the same time so It'll blow the rear tires off of it more then it already does  :D

question....how many other females are on this site that any of you know of? i've seen a few here and there, but def. not very many. i was just curious because i was thinking about it, and i mean...yea, i dont really wanna race the 35th or anything, def. not now, maybe ever, but i'm sure there's a few females on here who do that kind of stuff. i mean, its no big deal..just wondering.

haha! get ME down the strip?! YEA RIGHT! i'm hoping to go w/ shane..he said we're taking the 35th no matter what...but if anyone goes down the strip in it, it'll def. be shane! lol. i dont mind watching that stuff, but there is no way at all, that i'll EVER be doing that...i'm a wuss when it comes to that:eek: :p but thats ok...we dont know how long we'll be there tho, at least not yet. we havent talked to each other much about it, tho we do plan on coming for at least 1 day.

There will be other Lady drag racers racing. My wife for one,she
drives are SC Bird.

Quicklady you should at least make one or two passes. The passes do not
need to be full throttle passes off the line to have fun. And to get a life
long rememberal experiance.

You can just make a practice pass during qualifing., to see if you like it.
you don't have to race others during the eliminations. You can pull out
and let Shane drive during elimination rounds.

It would be fun for both you and Shane if you make a pass. You just have stage fright. Go for it. When the light turns green just take off the line
at part throttle for 50 feet. Then just add throttle.

Drag racing is one of the most safest form of racing there is.And its
fun to have some freindly competion between a couple. You and Shane
can compair time slips.

Thanks Randy

i dont think its stage fright really...idk what it is tho..that stuff has always scared me, and i do understand that drag racing may be like, the safest kind of racing, but stilll...idk. we'll have to see what goes down. idc if shane wants to take it for a few runs, more power to him...but like i said if i were to do it, i dont think it'll be this year...maybe it will be...who knows. it would be pretty funny if me and shane did line up next to each other and what not...but meh, idk guys...

It's pretty cool, the first time at the strip.....

You probably drive faster on the freeway than when you go thru the traps at the end of the quarter, anyway......

Race Shane for the 35th pink slip.

If you win ,you get the 35th free,

If ya lose, you just pay the asking price for the 35th .

Now that (above) is debateable......lol........sorry shane....had to say it....:D

Besides, the knowledge base here around Columbus on the SC seems to be pretty good. I mean after all there are some of us that have PLENTY of experience taking them apart.....it's just the putting them back together again that takes time.....(3 years and counting....GRRRRRR!!!!!!!)

Actually the only thing that I was kinda scared to mess with on an SC was the suspenssion but after taring apart the front and rear suspenssion on my race car I am confident that I could do just about anything to an SC and get the job done right.
