Traded economy cars, Yippee!

Since insuring a car in Baghdad is likely cheaper than insuring a car in Detroit I decided to sell my commuter car Focus ZX3 and downgrade to an older model that I can cover with liability only.

After checking out a bunch of junky Probes, escorts, and cavaliers I found an Escort ZX2 S/R. I was surprised to learn that these cars have some toys added from the factory such as; iceman intake, B&M shifter, Borla muffler and tip, centerforce dual friction clutch, eibach springs, suspension pieces made by energy suspension, Tokico struts and rear disc brakes, along with a 6 disc cd changer and 150mph guage cluster. Also, for some weird reason ford decided to paint the intake and valve cover blue. Supposedly there were only 3000 S/R's made and only 500 black ones. The car is actually fun to drive and gets great mileage, slow by todays standards, but zippy nonetheless, here are some pics of a similar car.

I'm not a big fan of the rims myself, they should have used a regular old 5 spoke design or something along those lines. But I guess when you get a cheaper car than a focus you can't be choosy, and the improved gas mileage and performance over my focus will be a welcome change!

Foci get bad gas mileage?

They don't get terrible gas mileage, mine gets an average of 28-30 on the highway with a best of 32 (60mph for several hours straight). But the escorts are a bit lighter and more aerodynamic. The biggest difference for me personally will be moving from an automatic tranny to a manual, this alone should be good for 4mpg.

A buddy of mine in high school had/has one. I'm not 100% sure that he still has it. I thought it was a nice car.

Escort

My Daughter drove one of those for a couple of years. She traded it for a new Focus last year.

Gas mileage after driving 300 miles 70/30 highway to city is 38mpg. WOW, now maybe I can save some cash to get my SC tuned! :D
