Really bad bad struts tripping knock sensor ?

Could really worn struts cause the knock sensor to retart the timing. On my friends car the struts are soooo worn they make a continuous knocking sound all the time. Engine runs fine till it's warm then spits code 49 and bam, runs terrible. The engine is in excellent health mechanically, and does not knock noticeably. To test if this would I be able to unplug the knock sensor, or would I have to do something else like unbolt it and support it somehow. MOD says to test the sensor with a VOM and it should read over 10k ohm. Could I trick it with a 22k ohm resistor ? For a temporary fix for him could he just install a 180f thermostat to keep it in open loop ? Open loop would definately be better than 10 deg timing, right ?

Thanks
