Check with your DMV.
I usually call my insurance company and bring a current set of plates.

I recently purchased an SC from Florida and drove it to Connecticut. I got insurance cards from my insurer and the dealer provided me with a 30 day Florida temp registration. Once I got to Connecticut with the car, I was able to get the emissions’ completed with the Florida temp registration and then get a Connecticut plate.
If you're buying from a private seller then you have to check your state and the sellers state rules. Some states require you to do the title transfers and registrations prior to driving the car, some will allow you to drive a car with no plate only in a direct transit to your POD. Some will issue you a temp registration for interstate transit.. all the rules are different and real confusing. Many states have DMV websites with lots of information on them but typically don’t talk too much about interstate transactions. You may have to call them
Previously I was going to purchase one from Michigan but the seller had a title that was signed over to him from someone in Ohio which was a few months old. Although the DMV here in Connecticut might take that, it would require a dealer number to do it.
Good luck.
Some states like Ill you can go to the local curenncy exchange will the title and bill of sale proff of insurance and get a "drive away" sticker. That way if you are stopped and you may be its all legal.

My advice would be make sure everything is in tact with the title. Make sure the seller signed it correctly. Its a Beeatch getting a new one after you have gotten the car home. Get a receipt and make sure that YOU SEE the drivers license and notate the info from it. There are too many people selling cars the wrong way and you end up paying for it.

ok I bought my car from a private seller in Rhode Island and brought it back to my home in Florida...the answer is..every state is different..call your states DMV..They can answer all your questions...I wound up driving my truck up to RI and towing the car home and registering it in FL once I got it here...I needed a bill of sale and the former RI owners registration when I went to the tag office. I also had to have the car itself at the tag office so they could verify the VIN. But like I said it will depend on YOUR STATES LAWS! do you homework...call your DMV and find out everything you need..then call the state DMV where you intend to buy the car..that is what I did...be prepared so you wont miss anything...Thats my .02

thanks for all the info guys. i called the nebraska DMV and they said that all i need to do is make sure that the owner signs the title over to me and that its done correctly. now as far as not getting pulled over 100 times on the way home idk...i guess i'll just have to see wut happens. i dont imagine i'll get into too much trouble, hopefully. if any of you from ilinois read this...let me know if theres anything I need to do "legally" . thanks for all the info....i appreciate it tons.
