View Full Version : Loaded questions: Stock 0-60 & quarter for auto vs. 5 spd
I haven't found any kind of "hard" figures for 0-60 and 1/4 mile for the 89-93 SC's. They've bounced all over the place from upper 14's to lower 16's, and no mention of which tranny. I know about the variables, driver, weather......but I want to know what each tranny was rated at by any major magazine (new), just as a baseline. I'm trying to decide if I should hold out for a 5 spd or get an auto (much easier). If we aren't talking about much difference in performance, I'll go auto since my other ride is a stick.
Soo, can anyone fill the blanks? This would be good for posterity too:
89-93:
5 speed:
0-60=
1/4 mile=
Auto
0-60=
1/4 mile=
94-95
5 speed:
0-60=
1/4 mile=
Auto
0-60=
1/4 mile=

If you are asking whether the five speed or auto is inherently faster than the other then the answer is no. Just buy what you want to drive. There were several articles in Car and Driver and the sort for these vehicles over their life. I believe several are available for viewing in the SC Literature section on this site. Magazine numbers don't do much for me though.

Thanks, I missed the articles on the site somehow. I agree about magazine articles, just wanted some sort of idea. Their figures are are all over the place too. I figured the auto must be noticeably slower since most people seem to be looking for those. My '99 Amigo's a stick, I'd rather have an auto for this. Just didn't want to be shooting myself in the foot if (when) I get the bug to start modifying, and have to spend $$$$'s just to catch up to where the 5 spd is stock.
Thanks--and for the other thread too.

I read an article a long time ago, but i remember that the 95 SC auto took 7 seconds flat from 0 to 60 mph. the 1/4 mile was something like 15.2 @88 mph.
Also a 92 SC 5-Speed took 6.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. Sorry don't remember the 1/4 mile for this one.
But all of this depends on many factors; such as enviromental temp, altitude, driver ability etc, etc, etcl.
Last but not least remember that the 89-93 SC's had 210 HP while the 94 - 95 had 230 HP. :p
why the differnence in HP?
what's different?

I've done my reading, now that the section was pointed out to me, so maybe I can answer some of my own questions; for anyone searching in the future. Also, what I've seen, is that the HP/TQ figures went up due to a new/better supercharger. Basically the same other than that. Running across one for cheap might be a good swap (if you trust it), but otherwise probably an expensive way to get 20HP & 15TQ.
Avg 89-93 0-60 is from: 7.1 (5 spd) 7.23 (auto)
1/4 mile: 15.5 (5 spd) 15.53 (auto)
Avg 94-95 0-60 is right at 7 seconds (auto)
1/4 mile: 15.2 (auto)
*Different magazines, but still tells me about what I need to know--don't worry about the tranny, as Kevin was saying.
Seems that the extra oomph in 94-95 isn't anything to worry about.
For comparison, I got some figures off of an Imapala SS site (recently discussed in another section):
AVG 0-60 between magazines: 7.1
1/4 mile: 15.4 & 15.61 observed by club members (stock)
They also show Car and Driver results, but they were so off from the others that I disregarded them (6.5 sec to 60 & 15.0 in the 1/4)
That kind of helps me out too, with what to expect. A buddy of mine has an SS which is a great car and performs just right for what I want. Looks like the 2 are pretty evenly matched, but the SS has a pretty good aftermarket.

Like Damon said, the 94/95 blowers were improved to flow more air than the earlier versions. The compression ration was also increased from 8.2:1 on the earlier models to 8.5:1 on the 94/95's. The camshaft in the 94/95 engines is actually more tame than the eariler cars. The most aggressive camshaft used was in the 89-91 ( I believe) 5 speed cars.

The only mod I have is removed silencer and K&N. There are 111,000 mi on the original restrictive exhaust (which really needs to go) and I ran a 15.2 @91.13 at Famoso in Bakersfield with track temps near 100. I am no world class driver and this was my third run ever!

ps Kevin weren't the injectors upgraded in 94 as well to match the increase in incoming air?

Yes, the 94/95's got 36lb/hr injectors while the earlier models got 30 lb/hr injectors.
