Hey Ed, I have an update on the converter situation. As you know I had the computer reset and the light went off, well driving yesterday I hit a huge pot hole, DAMN YOU SCARBOROUGH, and the OD light started to flash again.
Could this be some sensor and not the torque converter itself that's causing the OD light to come on?
BTW when the light is flashing I still have the use of OD. I originally thought that the OD was not working when the "OD/OFF" light was flashing. Can you run this info by your tranny tech and see what he thinks?

Steve, the OD can still function with the light flashing, the flash is just to warn you of any electronic troubles with the trans. Other than the converter itself, it could also be the torque converter clutch solenoid, but it won't set an individual code just for that. Without disassembly and testing, it's hard to know for sure what the exact trouble is.
thx

Ed I will be taking the car in on Thursday. I told John at TDS to check it out and if the converter needs replacing do so on the same day. He will porvide the TC. It's annoying having the light on, not to mention my car's tranny could suffer additional damage if neglected.

Just out of curiosity, what's he going to supply you with for a converter ? A stock replacement, or a mild stall unit ?
cheers

Ed I never asked, I just thought that it would be a stock replacement. That's what I would want.
What exactly is a mild stall unit?

Something with maybe 2200 - 2400 rpm stall speed, a stock one for that car is probably about 1800 rpm or so.

Ed, which one would be better. I have no clue....this is indicated by my post earlier this week.

If you intend on drag racing the car, and are looking for best performance out of it, a mild converter can help to get you out of the line better. It would allow you to powerbrake the car to a higher rpm at the line, so that if you have the needed traction, you can come out at 2400 or so instead of 1800 ... getting you started off the line more in the meat of the powerband of the engine. Maybe Dr. Fred can give you a more specific recommendation on the best stall speed for an SC with your mods. But as an advance warning, be prepared to pay quite a bit for a good quality 4R70W stall converter, and you should add an auxiliary trans cooler if you haven't already. The looser converter will slip more than a stock one, which generates more heat. If drag racing the car is only going to be an occasional thing, I would suggest you just stick with a stock replacement unit.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't plan to beat on my car very much .....and after seeing the price for some of those higher stall converters I think I will be sticking with the stock one.

They changed the torque converter, and valve body and now the light is off and the car feels very nice.:)
Too bad a higher stall converter is so damn expensive of else........

Good news Steve ....
Too bad you didn't have the car back in time to give the new converter some "severe duty testing" today at St. Thomas ...
cheers
