View Full Version : Selling the SC

Looks like I will be selling my 92 SC. Over 40k invested but need the money (new baby). I think I may go with a GTP down the road. I looked at their club web site. They have alot of quick cars over there and they made them very fast for alot less money than you can with the SC. Only thing I hate about it is front wheel drive layout. Anyone else think this would be wise? I know this is an SC site and we all love our cars, I have had fouir SCs myself. Just wandering, if I had to start over with another car and spend money to upgrade, which one makes a better, more reliable and less expensive-to-maintain platform?

I have an 01 GTP and like it very much. My two complaints are the FWD and auto trans.
If your serious about making a Grand Prix fast, I would consider a GT with a turbo kit.

What kind of cost involved in putting a turbo on?

Somewhere around 3 grand, and I think there are a few different kits available. I don't know for sure what that includes, but if you check over at clubgp.com you find all the info you need. At the very least, you could always buy a used kit.

Nothing against SC's, but I really like the GTP's. I might even consider one for a daily driver since they are easy to get into the 13's and respond well to mods. I kind of wanted a Marauder, but the GTP is faster stock, and can run faster for cheaper. FWD I can live with. I wish the interiors of the GTP weren't all gray plastic, but I can live with that too. You can get a used GTP coupe pretty cheap. There are some nice aftermarket hoods and wheels for them too.

I checked out the GTP website, they have some really good looking cars there. The black one on the cover with the new hood and big wheels looks awesome. I have nothing against the SCs, I just need the money right now. I saw a video clip of a GTP outrunning a lightning, so I know they can be quick.

I would pick a mark viii over gtp because: rwd, 4.6 dohc, also responds to mods very well and overall a much better car using better materials when built.

I personally look at the time and effort invested in getting familiar with a car platform and find it hard to throw that away. What you know about your SC isn't going to be worth jack if you go to a GTP.

If you want to go fast cheap get an Fbody camaro or a stang....Get the heck away from 3.8 v6's!..The SC and the GTP are two different animals...if you get rid of the SC why go to that?

thats what im going to be doing next year. ill proboly pick up a 1973 camaro. buy a 400HP Complete motor for 3,000 and a auto racing trans for 1,000 and about 2,000 in other parts and i'll be good for a daily driver :) i will work jsut to pay for gas i dont care. 400hp+ daily driver is bad ~~~ :D
what more could a person want ?

I had a 97 Z-28 6-speed that I sold earlier this year. I know that the f-body or mustang platform can be very fast but I'm looking for something that not everybody has. That's what appealed to me about the SC in the first place. When I go to the track here, I'm the only SC there, seems everyone else has a mustang, camaro or honda, it's good to be different. Ultimately I would choose a 87 Grand National, but when you find one in good shape they are way expensive.

yeah thats what i was looking for but the cheapest GN ive seen was $7k
if you wanna get crazy you could get a honda civic and drop a 350SB in it :)
how durable are the gtp transmissions though ? can they handle more power ?

From what I've read, the tranny on the GTP is pretty tough. I guess it depends on how wild you upgrade your ride before you need to worry about the tranny. As far as trying to make a Honda fast, I would never drive an import, I'm totally pro-domestic. I havent seen a Honda yet that I thought was cool. If I was going to go that route, being the racer boy route, I would get a SRT-4. I know they are ugly but they are decent quick even before upgrades and they are sold by an American company. Looks like I wont be able to sell my car anyway. There's over 40k invested in it, it's fast as hell, but no-one wants to pay what I'm asking.

GTP's are pretty common however and so is that engien setup in a slew of cars..Nothing like an SC.
I dont know man....You can get a marauder and get into teh 13's relatively cheaply when compared to an SC....Have a nice ride...Room..and definitely something different
I bought my mustang because I always wanted a 87-93 convertable...I get sick of it..Then love it..Hate it..Love it...Always loved my SC however slow it may be!
Now If you want a total sleeper....Get an 87-88 turbo coupe...Lil money and go quick...Me I love teh 87-88 tbird sports and xr7 cougars..5.0 v8...different...And easy to mod

Getting a GTP to be different? When the looks exactly like the GrandAm, Bonneville, and all other GrandPrixes.
I second the Marauder, and at times I really wonder if I did the right thing by not buying one new and getting me 93s (SC and 5.0) and 96 (XR-7). Now to most people they won't be able to really tell the difference in the panthers but car guy will in a heart beat.

I do like the Marauder, it's still too new though to be affordable. I have an 04 Impala SS I'm paying on now. I want something I can by with cash and not cost too much, that of course is also the appeal of an SC. They arent expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love my SC. Right now I just need the money and am looking what to get next. If I could find a modded SC down the line I would pick it up. Just don't want to start over again from ground zero. tooo expensive.
Scott Long

It's still expensive to build a 12 second SC but not so much as it once was. We now have a lot of proven recipes out there so you can buy the parts once and be done with it. It used to be that guys (not to name names) were buying the latest greatest thing everytime something new came out. It gets very expensive that way. I just did a few bolt ons, and sat back and watched to see what works and what seems to not be worth the money. I will build my SC by using parts combo's proven to perform. I will spend a lot of money in the near future, but I understand that I'll never get it back. It's a choice you make, you mod your car for your own enjoyment. Most of the time a stock car sells for more than a modified one. Look at GN's, stock mint cars are worth more than 11 second daily driver cars.
If you had to start over again on an SC I'd say be willing to drop around $6000 to get into the 12's or high 11's. Then you still have to do the paint job, interior, suspension, etc... I'm guessing $6000 on heads/cam blower/ic, trans/convt/gears and tires.
T-bird Tim
10-30-2006, 09:27 PM
I'm thinking just adding the front-mount IC and this one is in the 12s already. It's pretty stout. I havent had another SC around here be able to even get near me in a race.
$6000 to get into the 11s? Dream on. It may go 11 but not for very long. $transmission ? $ rear end. $Engine strong enough to sustain 11S. My beat so far is 12.985 to go 11s crank pulley $185 to go to 20% od. 60lbs injectors $360, Zex nitrous kit $500 or more with all the stuff to go with it. Thats not bad on top of the $800 I have in my trans $250 in the rear end, engine a mear $5000 did I mention headers, exhaust, fuel pump, and all the other odds and ends. Try $15000 or better ask Dave or Kevin.

i know cash is important now but your going to be selling a 40k investment for less then 25% of what you have into it
and you want another in the future?
just take out a personal loan for 7500 and keep the car in the garage
7500 is actully alot for an sc even a modded one sad but true didnt rich thompsons sell for 5500?
theres only a small amount would would pay that much for a 92 no matter whats done
my 2 cents its a nice car keep it

Give me $6000 and I'll put my SC into the 11's.
I guarantee you can get 12's for $6000 in mods.
Lentech, 3.73's, ET Streets, 2600-3000 rpm convertor
coy stage 2 heads and cam, MP3, front mount, pullies,
50 lb. injectors, 255lph fi pump, 80mm TB, 80mm MAF.
Right around $6000 and it would run mid 12's easy. Throw in a few hundred more for a nitrous kit maybe 75 shot and you could go 11.80's if you can get a good 60 ft.
How long will it run before it blows up?:eek:
Scott Long
10-30-2006, 10:28 PM
hopefully quite a while. Dalke made 449 rwhp through a stock high mileage bottom end. I believe the tune was key in keeping it alive. I bet with an MP3 and auto that'd be more like 370-390 at the wheels and that even can run 11's. Chris Wise went 11.90's with about 390 rwhp with an M90 that might not have even flowed as much as an MP3.

Someone will spend on a car what they feel its worth. The SCCOA is the wrong place to sell an SC. We are our own worst enemies when it comes to resale value.
I bought my low mile 94 5 speed for 6,000 basically stock..To me it was a bargain..Someone else might say I'm crazy.
If I was in the market for a worked SC...I would perfer to buy one already done and would be willing to spend a few extra $$$ on a real nice one.
Chris W got a nice amout for his car...Find teh right buyer and it will sell..But here is the wrong place to sell..I garuntee

SC owners are getting wiser. If you've got a car that already has $10k in work into it, that's 10K you save someone from having to spend. The only issue is you have to have spent it wisely. 10k on crap is just 10k on crap.

Well I bought mine in its current state for $4000, so I'd call that a steal (well once I get running at 100% again). Consider all the mods and the street value of a stock Mn-12.

I would have to agree with Damon,we are our own worst enemy when it comes to the value of our cars;now I'm not saying let's all sell them for 10,000$,I'm just saying that we all know the price of parts&labor etc...So that when someone does decide to get out:eek: we as a club do not d-value our own cars:o Just my $0.02

CMac89
11-01-2006, 11:20 AM
Your list of pricing is just all parts bought ready to put on. Of course that's going to cost you a lot. If you do things yourself it will end up costing you WAY more money than it is actually worth buying complete for.
I have about $2500 worth of mods on my car and it is 12 second capable.
75mm TB
80mm MAF
Custom 3 1/2" intake tube
Custom FMIC setup
5% OD
Self-Ported 94/95 blower
MP inlet
Self-Ported stock valve heads
212/220, .531"/.539" cam
Rebuilt motor
Every piece of work and assembly was done by myself. I know I would have spent atleast twice as much if I had somebody else do the work or bought parts ready to put on.
Save yourself some money, don't be lazy, and pick up a damn wrench:) . Excuse my ignorance, for a second, as I know some people don't have the facilities or "know how" to do all, some, or any work themselves.

ET Streets:.....................................$300? ?
They're $160-$170 per tire for the ET Streets depending on the size. The tires I choose to run are $190 a tire.
converter:......................................$5 00-600????
Most people get a really low RPM stall with a non-lockup that are about $600. Depending on the transmission, for a good converter you'll spend about $950 for. Everybody runs a AOD so we'll just say $600.
camshaft........................................$2 50??
I bought mine for $300.
Gotta get a chip & tune...................$200???
The chip cost $300 alone. For a tune with dyno time will be around $120/hr.

~~~~ I'm gonna sell this car and buy a cobra. Anyone want it? $2500 as it sits.
I still think you could make a serious 11 second effort for $6000. Especially if you shop the buy/sell like I do. Don't have to buy everything new.
And just f.y.i. I can get a Coy Stage 2 cam for $165.00 plus shipping if I send him a core. $300 I believe is for the new billet blanks custom ground. I'm talking regrind.
The convertor I'm buying is the hughes performance 3000 rpm non locker. I also need a 1 pc. hardened input shaft and a trans cooler. I'll try to find a good price on the shaft cheaper than from lentech. Not sure who else makes them but I'll search the corral. Also I will need a trans cooler, but I can get one from Lane Automotive since they are like 15 minutes from here and are one of the worlds largest speed shops.
I already have a nitrous kit on the car, NOS-05115 75 hp dry kit. Bought it used for $300.00 off ebay. I can use the stock block with a good tune. I don't think I want to go the route of the MP3 but I can get one and lets say 20% OD. I don't need to spin it 30% because I have nitrous, that will cool the air and make the charge more dense, more power, and less worries about OD'ing the blower to insane speeds. I'm going to try to get it as fast as I can with a ported late model and MP plenum. If I need more I'll spend the money on a better blower. Neal Frisbee ran 11.80's w/ nitrous and an S-Model so I think it'll be fine. Of course I'd buy used, and then maybe have the blower rebuilt if it needs it.
ET Streets are like $170-180 a tire. The Radials are like $10.00 cheaper most places I've seen. I can get BFG 255/50 Drag Radials for $139.00-149.00 around here so we'll see how those work. Unfortunately I'll probaby have to buy a wideband 02 so that's $400 unless I can find used. I'm going to see about 42 lb. injectors and try to go as fast as I can on them. I can get a good deal on a set barely used.
I could go on longer, but this was really about selling an SC, so we are off track. I never realized how fast money can disapear when you are modding a car. I am glad I've never sat down to figure out how much I've sunk into my car already. But it's fun and it makes me happy so I guess thats what counts.
I still think the $8000 CMRE S2 engine, a whipple, and all the supporting stuff would be the cheapest most direct way to go, and I'd still have probably $12-13k in the under hood, not to mention another 2k for a trans/convt. combo, gears, racing seats, paint job, rims/tires..... I like this car, but I don't know maybe I'm stupid for wanting to sink this kind of money into it.
I mean I love the SC, and want one of the fastest ones around, but man if I sink 1/2 my income into it, maybe I should be locked up.
suspension is gonna be KYB's, Eibach springs, and airbag lifts in the rear springs if needed.
Bracing... car is hardtop not sunroof, a cage will be put in if it runs faster than 11.49 but that will be a while. I don't know of any subframe connectors nor have I seen any ideas but would entertain them.
Brakes... cross drilled rotors front and rear, porterfield brake pads front and rear, and convert to power brakes w/ tbird lx booster, crown vic master, line locks on the front brake lines.
