head bolt torque?

My 89 shop manual says to torque all the bolts to spec and in sequence... then it says to back all of them off 2-3 turns and then repeat the torque sequence? is this true? I thought the bolts yield the first time your torque them down and by untorquing them you have a streched bolt... help!

follow the instructions. it may seem odd and that it would not work, i did my hg with arp studs. perfect. i would bet on the book being right.

Just went throught his today :) and i'm hoping it's right.. So far my shop manual hasn't failed me.. but man it does seem odd..

Also i think it'll take some time for the bolt to take that stretch length.. also after the backing off you torque them to 55ft/lbs? then turn them 90-110 degrees.. so your stretching bolts even more then the first torquing..
