Guys yesturday I made the hike all the way down to Harvest, AL and buy yet another 35th 5spd. This one only has 96k miles on it and is near mint. It was quit an exciting trip to say the least. I dont have time to tell the story right at this moment as I am about to leave for my mom's place where the car is at so I can take more pics of it, but I'll give you guys a "teaser" of some of the action that went on last night :D I'll post back here later on this after noon with more pics of the car.

yeah, i was alseep in the back seat and i was awaken by a loud bang and a bouncy ride...definetly sucked...we began to get really bored waiting for the mechanic to come out and fix it...definetly sucked...we ended up losing about 3 hours of drive time because of the damn tire...insane stuff right there.

Ok so now that I have some time to sit behind the computer I'll share with you guys our story. Well we got up bright and early at 4:30am saturday morning to make the trip all the way to Alabama. One thing I learned rather quickly once we got into Kentucky and Tennessee is that my Expedition did not like towing an empty trailer up hill some freeway hills let alone with a near 4000lbs Tbird on the back of it. We made pretty good time getting down to Alabama because we were cruising constantly around 75-85mph. Once we had the car and made it to Sam's credit union so we could have the bill of sale notorized we noticed that one of the trailer's tires was flat. After closer inspection I found a nail in the tire so we put three cans of fix-a-flat in the tire and when that still did not stop the leak we got a plug for it at an auto parts store. So after about 20-40 minutes of driving on the freeway at around 80mph somewhere in Columbia, TN the truck started shaking really bad then we heard a loud BOOM! The tire had exploded and shreaded. Jim thinks that the reason the tire blew was because of all the fix-a-flat that we put in it and the speed that we were traveling on the freeway. Needless to say if it was speed related I did not learn my leason as I was back up to 75-80mph once we were back up and running again  It took the mechanic just over an hour to show up so we had to entertain ourselves to pass the time. We came up with some pretty amusing things to say the lease to pass the time  I think dealing with the tire situation added about 3-4 extra hours to the trip. We ended up getting home just past 1:30am so it was a pretty long day. Right before we got food and delt with all the trailer tires bs a member of the SCCoA actually spotted us parked next to us. His name was Don (sorry Don I forget your last name and sn on here) and was a pretty cool fellow. He has two SC that sounded pretty sweet.
Details on the car: Its a 35th 5spd with 96k on the clock. Its got an MPII, MP inlet plenum, MP 85mm TB, MP raised top, Motor sports roller rockers, UD pulleys, a smaller SC pulley, 76mm C&L MAF, cone filter, some form of aftermarket exhaust, B&M Ripper shifter, 195gph fuel pump, motor sports 30lbs injectors, and aftermarket tensor pulleys. I think that covers all the mods that it has. Its got fresh paint and the seats are completely redone (sorry I forgot to take pics of the seats). This car is near spotless but its got motor issues. Sam said that he thought the HG had blow on it. I cant smell any coolant in the exhaust but it smokes like a mother on the driver side. It looks like there is either a massive oil leak on the driver side and possibly a PCV problem. When installing my 76mm MAF this morning I found a good amount of engine oil inside the intake tube wo my guess is that the PCV value is done. Other then that the SC top got coverd in oil not to mention I found that the oil pan drain plug is all blue RTV'ed on there  I am not really to sure what cause engine oil to get pooled into the intake tube. It sure runs pretty nice for having motor issues.
Future plans: Well if I do have to take the heads off this motor then I am seriously thinking about putting a set of Dalke's heads and cam packages on this car which what Dalke said with the mods that I have now should put me around the 350HP range. Not sure if that is wheel HP or crank HP number. It needs some things here and there to make it perfect so I plan on doing those things to it.
Here are some pics of the car. Keep in mind that I have not had time to wash or wax this car yet so its a little dirty in the pics.

I believe that is Nick's (screen name "Unclenick") old 35th. He spent a considerable amount of money restoring it after his old 90 put a rod through the oil pan. Most if not all of the mods done to the 35th came off his blown up 90. If I were you, I'd get a tune real fast. I'm sure the 90 he blew up did so due to the fact he wouldn't get a tune.
Search the Florida chapter by his user name and you will find plenty of posts regarding the 35th. After he sold the car to Sam, he disappeared... I MEAN HE LITTERALLY DISAPPEARED:rolleyes: But that is a whole other story.

Yeah I always wonder why they put that 45mph speed rating on those trailers when Uhall knows damn well no one is going to go 45mph. I have towed Uhall trailers before without feeling any vibrations. I imagine going as fast as I did, did not help matters.

Actually yes I wish the 5.4L had about 100 extra HP and 200 more TQ then it does. It deffinately did not like pulling the 35th up hills.

Bryan,
Yes this is Nick's old 35th and it does need a tune pretty bad. Its got all the mods that I listed previously and still has the stock injectors   I think I am going to get some 42lbs injectors this we and clean it up. I talked with Dave Dalke earlier today about getting it tuned here shortly after the 1st of the year. Possibly after getting the title switched over today I could wash it and wax it then take a few more pics of it.

Shane, fix a flat is flammable. Also those trailer tires are only speed rated for 55 mph due to not being able to cool properly from the higher speeds. It might not be so bad unloaded, but with 4000 lbs of weight on them, there is a lot of friction which causes a lot of heat. Add to that the fact that it was still probably slowly losing air and it's a bad combo as you found out.
The car looks really nice. I remember seeing Uncle Nick post around on here. Whatever happened to the rims?
2 things stick out immediately... 30 lb. injectors, and stock intercooler. I'd probably throw in a 255 lph forced induction pump too.
If you even suspect the head gaskets, just replace them. It's not that hard to do. Dammit if you guys lived closer to my side of southern MI, I'd come over and we could all tear that thing down and have it running in a day or two if you had a shop lined up to mill the heads.
If you are going to change the cam, get a BHJ balancer on the way for that car because if it's original and you pull it off, might as well take the crank sensor ring off the back and pitch the balancer in the trash. Seriously. I learned the hard way.
It looks like that car is headed in the right direction with mods, and just needs a few more things to really be impressive.
If it was my car I just bought, I'd be ordering the ARP 2.8L Chevy head studs, and a head gasket set, along with some 42 lb. injectors and sampling tube, and since the car was going under the knife might as well put in the 255 lph pump. I know that's about a grand worth of crap there but if you ain't gonna do it right why bother you know?
Good luck with it, once you get it all taken care of you have a nice SC to drive so take care of this one.
Whatcha gonna do with the other 35th 5-speed?
Oh yeah welcome to the world of the 3 SC ownership.
Triple Threat time if you get them all running.

U-haul trailer with a loaded 4 door 92 accord on it i couldn't hardly tell it was there with the chevy... 65mph up small grades without even getting the convertor to unlock.... would hold OD on pretty steap ones to... Its all about low-RPM tourque (which the 5.4 lacks) might have about the same TQ and HP as the chevy 350 vortech, but its at alot higher RPM's... Also ford auto's rob ALOT more power than GM's.. 4l60e (not sure if mine is a 4l60e or a 4l80e....).. I pulled another 92 accord a few years ago on a u-haul trailer with my old 2wd 300 ford truck and it was all it wanted... U-haul trailers are heavy as hell!! I'm guessing they push 2000lbs empty but i might be mistaken..

Gary's old car got sold a long time ago.
This is my planned mod list (most of these parts are already on the car). MPII, MP inlet plenum, 10% sc pulley, MP raised top, MP 85mm TB, 76mm MAF, UD pulleys, full catless exhaust, liguid to air intercooler, Dave Dalke heads and cam, roller rockers, centerforce clutch, 42lbs injectors and sampling tube, and 195gph fuel pump. I figure that should be about enough to get me to my horse power goals.
The liquid to air intercooler will be installed on the 30th of this month. After that I have to wait for Dave to get a set of heads and a cam available to me (please Dave make it soon so I can build this thing :D) then get it tuned. I have a line on some good used drag tires mounted on SC rims already for cheap. Its all a matter of time.

It was mentioned in the add when Sam baught the car that it had ported heads already but Sam did not mention this to me. Also in the add previous to Sam owning it that it had a new Spec stage II clutch in it but Sam said it has a centerforce clutch in it. After buying the car I test drove another SC with a spec stage II clutch and it feels completely different then my new 35th's clutch so I really dont know what to believe it has.

Shane,
I think your going to need bigger injectors (50 or 60#) and a bigger fuel pump (255 lph high pressure). Depending on the condition of the blower and what boost level you can get out of it before the belts quit gripping you may reach your HP goal or you may not. I had to put coated rotors in my MPIII to get to that power level.
I think you should be consulting with Dave about how realistic your goals are if he's the guy providing the heads and cam.
David
PS: Tell me more about the air to liquid IC your getting.
PPS: I thought you were unemployed
DamonSlowpokeBaumann
12-21-2006, 06:19 PM
Davis N there is a whole thread on the liquid to air IC he's getting.
Shane,
If you get some really good heads and a matching cam you can get there. 350 is obtainable but requires a good flowing set of heads. I guess you need to find out how many have done that with an MPII and if that was that with out without welded exhaust ports and or larger valves. I dont think 350 is unrealistic for you so long as you get the proper head/cam combo to support that. As David said if you are getting them from Dave D see what he has to say about what type of head you will need to achieve your goal. And 50's may be required..Depends on your theory on fuel injuectors. Thast best left to who ever will be tuning your car. Me I'd perfer to use a smaller injector if I can get away with it
quick35th
12-21-2006, 09:39 PM
David and Damon,
The heads and cam I am getting are dirrectly from Dalke himself. We did not discuss cam specs as of yet but he did say that the heads would be fully ported, bigger valves, behive (sp) valve springs and a few other goodies to get the heads and cam installed. I dont know what Dalkes heads will flow. Maybe he will see this thread and chime in.
The liquid to air intercooler I am going to run is detailed in a thread in the new products forums. Unfortunately this prototype setup is unproven in design but uses proven parts so I am very anxious to get Dalke's heads and cams so I can get it dynoed. Dave says that he cant get me a set of heads and cam till maybe spring time but I hope I can get ahold of them MUCH sooner.

PS, Yes David I am currently unemployed :)

Damon,
The heat exchanger is mounted on the lower radiator suport near the air dam on the front bumper. Its mounted so that its laying on its side and not standing up and its got a fan mounted on top of it to pull heat out of it. Once its installed I'll get some pics of the setup. Besides the heat exchanger the liquid to air intercooler uses a Moroso Cool Can to keep things cool.

I drove down to SCP today and got a 255lph fuel pump, 42lbs C&L sampling tube, scp 3.5" CAI, and scp light weight jackshaft pulley. I cant wait for next saturday to get here so I can get the liquid to air intercooler on the car. Hopefully I'll have a new pvc valve, NGK Iridium plugs, Taylor wires on the car, and my driver side valve cover leak fixed before I get the intercooler installed.

you went to scp without me

If you're unemployed where are you getting money for all this (car, parts, etc...)?
I don't know about the MP2 and 350 rwhp. I'm sure it'd be easier with a 5-speed though than an automatic. Now getting it to hookup and run a good time is another story, but for the dyno sake the 5-speed is more efficient.

I don't know about the MP2 and 350 rwhp. .I do. I have an MPI here that pulled down 350rwhp through an automatic on a Mustang Dyno. On a 5spd it would have been at least 370rwhp. And that's just with a double IC.

Wow, what kind of pulley and jackshaft and or crank overdrive was it running. Why is it then we aren't seeing over 400 rwhp with MP3's if they are so much more efficient. Is it because no one is using one to it's full potential yet besides Kevin Leitam?

Tomorrow at 8am my new 35th goes in the shop for the liquid to air intercooler, 42lbs injectors, battery relocation kit, and some new valve cover gaskets. Today I installed some blue Taylor spark plug wires and NGK Iridium spark plugs. The combustion chambers must have been full of carbon and the plugs must have been fouled because after I installed the new stuff it ran 10x better idling and it pulls really hard now. It pulls so good now that its finally realizing that it needs more fuel because now its bucking really bad if I get to far into boost. Its that or my plug wires are bad somehow.
Anyways I'll report back with tomorrows results and post tons of pics of the install. Here are a few day shots that I took of my 35th next to Sean's XR7 today.

Yesturday was a pretty eventfull day, got the liquid to air intercooler installed on my 35th and got Sean's ported early model M90 put on his Cougar. About the liquid to air; it was a pretty straight forward swap. It require to drill some holes to mount the heat exchanger, pump, intercooler, remove the washer fluiid container, relocate the starter silonode, and put the battery in the trunk. It started and ran fine from the get-go. Oh does this MPII sound so cool with this intercooler setup, its well worth the money I spent on it. You can rest your hand on the upper intercooler tube and feel that its warm and then feel the lower tube and feel that its really cold. Needless to say this system works great and will deffinately inprove performance. Here are some pics:

That looks pretty sweet Shane!!!!!
Who's shop is that? They have a lot of space in there. Who's the other sc with the polished stock wheels?
So I take you have determined this car has good head gaskets.

The shop belongs to the guy that owes the SC with the polished stock SC wheels and also thats the car that I got my liquid to air intercooler from.
I am nearly 100% sure the head gaskets are not blown on my 35th but I am conserned that the rings are shot in it though :(

I know this is hideously old, but shane, your an idiot for getting rid of this car.... it was too much fun even though it never ran right, you gave up on it too soon.
And on a side note, how is this car doing now to the guy who picked it up.

Actually now that I am looking back at those pictures of that car I wish that I could have kept it. It was a really nice car with just a bad engine in it. I'll have to get another one just like it someday.
