View Full Version : So... I got rid of my SC... for this...

I'm not much of a computer guy. And when electrical things started to go down hill (again) on the SC, I decided I wanted to get rid of it. My first Idea was to take out a loan (so I could help to establish credit, I'm 18, senior in HS, and work 35+hrs/wk) and pay it off. I wanyed something newer then 98. I found a 99 Silverado, and then found a 01 F-150... that I had my heart set on.

Needless to say, I found this pile, and traded in my beautifly appearing SC. I kept my teal LX, for a backup car, and now this is my new project. (Atleast I dont have to pay off a loan) :D

It's a 1983 Chevrolet Blazer, K-5, Full size. GM Performance Goodwrench 350, mild aftermarket cam, aftermarket rolling timing chain kit (or something like that), mated to the SM465 4-speed, with a super-low granny gear, with an NP208 T-Case, going to 32x11.50's. Body work has already commenced, obvious by the picture, and next on the list is getting rid of the transmission chatter that mysteriosly appeared.

Okay. The interior is nasty, but its on the list of things to redo..

Nah, I don't think he'll blow gaskets quite as fast in that thing, LOL!

My friend has a 94 Bronco with modifications to the V8, and suspension mods. It's such a fun vehicle, just pop her in 4WD low, lock the hubs, put it in 2 (the auto tranny rocks!) and go climbing! Too much fun, and with the work he's done, it's pretty freakin quick . . .I couldn't believe it outran my Rexxy the first time we raced.

LOL!

yes true but I don't see your GM goodwrench v8 getting you very far from what I have heard they aren't the best. I'd do a nice exhaust, carb, and intake keep it stock other than that

So what do you do to fix that hole in the rear behind the wheel? Did you just put a new panel in there? Is there another way to fix that? I have the ability to see between my inner fender(s) and the rear quarters. Dont know what to do.

My hole was on a reltivley flat area, so this, ghetto/jerry-rigged method actually worked. From the inside I used Incredible Goop (gel-like super adhesive glue), and stuck plastic card on the inside of the fender (actually they were roof's from model cars that i've built) Then I gooped all the seems. After it was thoroughly dry, I bondo'd it untill I got my desired finish.

where theres a chevy................

.....theres bondo

That is kind of thick for all of that dont you think? I have never had a good result using bondo. It looks good for a while, but then it cracks when it shrinks if it is in a long or large area. Is that not correct?

Tranny chatter is probably the throw-out bearing... Get an edelbrock performer intake that accepets spread or square bore carbs and run an 600cfm edelbrock or a new quadrajet... quadrajets make lots of power are economical and will run at crazy angles... If you dont care that much about mileage run the edelbrock performer RPM intake/cam and carb they make crazy power on a SB chevy and with a stick you won't need to change convertors or anything like that.. cheap set of headers will help out to... Used to have an 80 K5 it was slow(th-350 and 3.08's) but it would go anywhere i loved it untill someone in a cavalier sideswiped it and bent the frame! get the reinforcement plate to go behind the stearing box and do it now it is good insurance to save you from a ruined truck later..

Yeah, I've heard of the frame cracking from the steering box. Its got a Holley carb on it now (dont know what kind), but I really want to run the Holley Truck Avenger carb. I also will be ordering headers once all the mechanical issues or worked out.It needs an entire exhaust system, as it failed inspection; exhaust leak/rot (Probably cheepies, like Summit brand, or Heartland from JCW.) I also was looking at the JCW catlogue, and they have the 4" Tough/Rough country lift for $270, and 6" for $360 :D (best prices I've seen yet) Mine has the SM465 with the Granny Gear (I love it. I just put it in L, took off, and coasted along, with my foot completely off the clutch and accelerator)

Also, where can I find out what gears I have? Im curious...

and heres what I've got done on the interior..

Bed, door sills, header panel all done up in spray on truck bed liner. Soon the entire interior will match..

Holley carbs are crap for offroad and economy... get an edelbrock 600cfm much less to dick with and ALOT better offroad.... much more economical....easier to rebuild...

From what I've heard there's one carb that's really good for off-road use. So much so that Bronco types are converting to it. Said to have really good fuel control at high angles, along with good economy, and tip-in response which is handy for rock crawling and other low-speed endeavors.

The carb?

QuadraJet.

I had an old school hot rodder re-work a quadrajet and port a stock intake for me back when i was 16, put it on my truck (400 sb) and it would pin you back in the seat when the secondaries opened! it was sweet! he really knew his sh** about those things.. Later put the carb on a mild 350 and anything under 40mph you could break the back wheels loose... sweet carbs when they work right..

The problem with all carbs is the lack of knowledge that goes into it. If people actually understood the functions of each circuit of the carb, there would be a lot of clarity. The Q-jet is actually a reliable carb that can get REALLY good milage. The holly on the other hand has to be cut and drilled and such to make it tuned to your engine. Both are good, both can be reliable. And both have made amazing results on dynos/performance cars over the years. Its all just a matter of personal preferance.

One of the best things I did to my old 85 C10 with crate 350 was replace the Holley with an old used Quadrajet that my neighbor gave me for free. He said it came straight off of an old turbo buick 6 banger. It ran perfect with acceptable mileage and I never touched a screw on it. Just bolted it on and drove it. The Goodwrench crate motor was a turd though and made horrible noises with not so great oil pressure.
