What's the correct way to dyno a 5-spd car?

I saw some of you auto. guys dyno in St. Louis, but 5 spds require shifting. Do I drive it like I do at the strip?

Thanks in advance for your help!

4th gear

It should be done in 4th gear for the 5-speed.

With the back tires centered overtop of the dyno drums and all connections made with the computer, you start slowly and shift the car up into 4th gear.
When the car runs smoothly with no bogging (about 1500 rps) you mash down the accelerator pedal and give it hell and stop at about 5,000 to 5500 rpms.
That's all that's necessary because our motors are on the decline after that.

Another question

There are no connections to the cars computer, right?

The guys in St. Louis all had laptops connected to the cars computer. That's only necessary if they are gonna fiddle with the computer settings, right?

Can a laptop be connected to a stock computer, to read out the stock specs? The reason I ask, is that I have a Ford replacement computer, but the P/N's last digit is different than my OEM computer. I'm wondering what kinda calibration specs the computer actually has.
