Hey, i was just wondering if any of you guys have had the same problem?

My headlights are automatic and they won't turn on, even manually.

When dusk hits i hear them click , but no light comes on. My cluster light turns on though. My brake lights, turning signals, daytime and hi beams still work, everything works, just the headlights....

do i need a new headlight switch? or could it be something else?
All my fuses are in tact.

Thanks
Rob

Rob, it could be the switch, and / or the wiring connector plugging into it. Ford had a recall on 1992 and 1993 T-Birds with fog lights for an upgraded switch, and a new plug if necc., I don't know why 89 - 91 weren't included as well, since they used the same switch. Anyway, I'd recommend having a look at the connector for any signs of corrosion or melting. I can get you the upgraded switch and plug through the dealership if you need them.

Sounds like the headlight switch is the culprit yah.

When I first read it I figured you had it in high beam mode and that would explain the click, but then you made it seem like it wasn't, so who knows

You might as well upgrade now though and get the Competition Limited wiring harness

I checked it out and there's no corrosion or melting but I'm quite sure it is the switch. Ed can you tell me the part # and price please.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, the upgraded switch from the recall is a Motorcraft # SW-5542. Last time I looked, they were about $30.00 I believe. When I'm back to work on Monday, I'll check that out for you.

Ed, i went to ford with the part number you gave me (5542) and they said it was for cars without automatic headlamps, there is another part number ( cant remember) that is $20 more and they said it would be right. can i put 5542 on my switch and have it still working?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, I'll have to confirm that for you. I know that there was only one part number listed in the recall, but the earlier cars do list a different switch for with or without the auto. headlights.

I'll let you know on that.

thx

Hey Rob

I pulled out the information on the recall this morning to look at the details. There is just the one number listed for the upgraded part, SW-5542. In the technical instructions, it does mention about unhooking and reconnecting auto lamps during the procedure, so what I'm taking from that is the SW-5542 will be OK for auto lamps or not, even though for the original switch number it does list two different pieces.

thx

Rob, sometimes it just takes a bit more digging to get ALL of the info ... but please don't think I'm going to be correct every time !
