My friends brother has been talkin lots of crap about my SC even though hes never seen it run so I want to know what you guys think before It goes down this weekend.
I have a 93 SC reman longblock with 600miles, ported stock manifolds Flowmaster resonator & exhaust, ported blower w/10% pulley 15lbs of boost, Screamin demon coil pack, Accel wires, NGK Iraduim plugs,255gph fuel pump,36lb injectors,327 gears, short throw shifter,Mac Intake,76 maf, stock intercooler with 8inch fan, poly bushings everywhere. running 275/40/17s in rear and 245/45/17s in front. I know I need a FMIC but that wont happen for a couple weeks along with alum pullies.
his is a 88 Turbo Coupe - 5spd = Ported Intakes, Big T/B, Exhaust, Front Mount Intercooler, K & N, 355 Gears, T3 Turbo ,short throw shifter.

idk tough call my buddy use to have one bad turbo coupe like that. you got a lotta tire under there i think if you take him down low you could have it.

I think you could take that car. He is lighter, but you have some good mods and you have the low end torque power. I think if you rail him off the line you will be ok. Only thing with you IC the 10% may be too much. Is there a way you can put a 5% or stock pulley back on until you get the front mount? It may feel slower around town but in the 1/4 mile it will run faster with the stock pulley. I learned the hard way about that on my own car.
I don't know much about turbo's but I know a T3 is small. It really depends on the trim and the ar. of the turbo, but still even with those numbers I couldn't tell you much more about it. I know that the 4-cyl doesn't need as much turbo as a V8, so a smaller turbo will spool faster. Stock vs. stock an SC will wipe the floor with a TC, but I've seen a 12 Second TC that looked mostly stock under the hood. The one big thing they can do is aftermarket head from esslinger that flows a lot better than stock so if you pop the hood, if it has an esslinger head then he has some coin put into it and I might then worry. Dimitry from St. Louis had some SC's and TC's. He had a 13.50 pass on a TC with not much done to it so they can be fast. I think 3.55 is stock for a 5-speed TC. Not 100% sure but like 85% sure. Mustang guys usually talk about swapping a turbo coupe rear end for gears and trac-lok.
I'd either try to find out more about it from others he's raced and how it ran or just run him. Some people insist put up or shut up, heads up.
I'd like to have faith in the SC though so good luck.

Im gonna get the FMIC soon. So you think I should put the stock pulley back on till then?
Just wanted some feedback It will go down very soon. Lots of spare time at work.

It should be a good race but I think the turbocoupe might take it...:D

With the 10% you are creating too much heat and the computer will retard timing in the higher RPMS which takes away power. On the street you are driving at lower RPM and not stressing the blower for long periods of time so it feels strong down low, but for the 1/4 mile when you are wide open the whole time the air heats up fast and the computer pulls timing.
So yes I'd swap the stock pulley back on for the race.

I think the TC's came with Garrett IHI's...in which case a T3 should be an upgrade. Sounds like your friends TC has the right stuff to beat you. Both being manual...the drivers will play a huge part. Also, those TC seemed to run all over the map. Some of them were real dogs and then others, like Dmitiry's ran like striped apes. He ran 13's with less than that.
I wouldn't take him lightly. I think at best case you'll be able to hang, but I wouldn't bet on you running away from him. Oh, and I'm almost positive 3.55 was a standard ratio for the manual. Which BTW, it is not a T5. Looks like one, but 5th gear is useless in those tranny's and the first 3 gears are all different ratio's from the T5.

Why would any Supercoupe be afraid of a little 4cyl in a big T-Bird body ??

When my SC was almost stock I raced a TC running 18psi and a few other mods and I wasted it! I beat him by about 8-10 cars.

Unless the guy with the T-C can,t drive...U will be watching his taillights the whole time..IHI turbo is a japan turbo...Its small..But my T-C still 14.30 with minor mods...Now upgrade to the garrett t-3...Big gains...I said a 260-280 hp car,,if its got all the mods he says it does...Just like the old 5.0L stangs...Cheap speed...I know because i had about 9 of them...Loved everyone of them....
But best of luck to ya...

I sold my 88 TC and got the 92 for more room. Not that I regret it, but the TC would clean my clock. I had changed the IHI for the bigger T3, FMIC, 3" downpipe, no cats out to dual 2.5" dynomax bullets. All of this mandrel bent. I put the K&N cone on it and a Ranger roller. At the track with 100 octane and 20psi it would run 13.89-13.92 all day. I would launch on the 2 step and it would get really light in the front. Suspension wise, the car was all stock. I would adjust the PRC to full soft then unhook the connectors on front. These cars are pretty quick and mine with driver came in at 3650lbs with a full tank. Including the purchase price and all mods, I had maybe $1200 into it. Not a bad return for little no cash. I dont know how these cars respond to mods, but the TC will wake up really quick with the down pipe and a cone filter. Anything else is just icing on the cake.
Oh and yes, the 5spd cars come with 3.55 and the Auto's come with 3.73.

My 88TC 5spd, all stock, 14.72lbs of boost, kept up with Toxic281's 4.6 94 bird. For those who know Toxic281's bird, it was quick a year ago. I dont know if he has put that cobra motor in it yet.
Against my 89 SC 5spd, it was about a fender ahead of me, the entire time. All i had on my 89SC was a short throw, 10%, and aluminum jackshaft pulley.
The other reason the fox body mustang guys grab the 87-88 TC rear ends, is because they were the only foxes to come with discs on the rear...except the 93 cobra.

I wouldn't call the TC a heavy TBird body. It's built on the fox chasis which is lighter than the MN-12 chasis.
The IHI turbo is good for a paper weight. A T3 would flow better but still be small enough to spool quick. I'd like to see this race honestly.
What kind of tire are you on, what's he on?

TurboCoupe will take it unless he is not running right.
That about covers it.

245/40/17 is way to short for an SC. 245/50 is about right or 255/45.

Tom,
Why you doubt the SC? HAHA! I pounded one so he does have a shot.

I'd worry about the SC rear end hooking up more than anything else. If he gets a holeshot on you it could be over quick.

I wasnt too impressed with the TC even though we didnt get to finish the race. On the takeoff I had him by a little more than a car length. he said his engine bogged then when he shifted into 2nd his engine nearly jumped out of the car. his motor mounts were trashed. he said that he'd get it fixed soon but by then Ill have my FMIC and my throttle body in so we'll see.

Have him go to www.Turboford.net and look for them there. I can't remember who, but somebody was selling some nice ones.

i have owned a few SC's in various forms of modding. Own a worked turbocoupe at the moment. 250 rwhp at 3200 pounds WITHOUT me in it. Driver is key.
Beware of the good driver. That is all.
