History:
The original owner of this car ignored the ignition switch recall notice in the ‘90’s, and the switch failed and burned the interior significantly in ‘97. Fortunately, the car was closed up tight, and the fire snuffed itself out before it consumed the car. It then, in short succession, passed through his insurance company, then to a rebuilder, then to a private owner who intended to restore the car. After eight years of no progress, his wife said “it’s gotta go”, and I bought it in “fresh-burned” condition.
I pulled everything (including dash) completely out of the interior, to the sheetmetal, and replaced anything with even a hint of fire damage. Everything else was cleaned to like-new condition. A short list of things replaced:
Steering column assembly (new ignition cylinder with code-cut keys), steering wheel/correct horn pad, column bezels, instrument cluster, dash bezel assembly, dash wire harness, LH and RH vent panels, under-column trim (all clips intact), carpeting, windshield, LH “A”-post trim, both visors, headliner, moonroof switch and bezel (not broken), moonroof shade, various switches, etc. Other things I’m sure I’m forgetting.
Bottom line is that it looks like a brand new 90 XR7 inside now. The car was on a salvage title when I got it due to the fire damage and going through the insurance company, but have since gotten a clean title. Car is fully titled, licensed and insured, and has had NO body, chassis, suspension or collision issues.
Condition:
Body = 9/10: Original paint is glossy with no sign of clearcoat damage. Body is straight with no collision damage or repairs. All body panels are in excellent condition. This is a life-long South Texas car, so it doesn’t know the meaning of rust. Period. Couple of small dings on sides.
The car had a dealer-installed spoiler and ground effects kit, which I removed. The dealer wet-sanded the clearcoat on the lower body sides, I guess to promote adhesion of the body tape. Therefore, the car will need re-shot from the rub strip down (maybe some of you bodywork magicians out there can buff it back; it's not sanded through to the color coat). There are a few small rivet holes that need to be filled in the jambs, and two on each fender. The deck lid has been drilled for the spoiler, which will need to be repaired. This car has always been garage-kept so there are NO fade or clearcoat issues whatsoever. Door hinge wear, you ask? - NONE. The doors go "click", with a gentle push on the door handle.
The original wheels are nearly perfect, and I have installed a full set of NOS center caps. The car has a brand new set of Goodyear Assurance TripleTread tires in the original size.
Interior = 9.5/10: Soft upholstery and carpeting is in excellent condition with no rips, stains, snags, wear-through. Driver’s bolster needs re-dyed. Gauges, dash bezels, console, switches, shifter knob, door switch panels all excellent. All interior panels, including door panels are excellent. Door handle cups both have all 3 clips intact, and are tight. Plastic seat skirts are as new. Dash has NO CRACKS. Trunk and accessories are complete and in like-new condition.
Mechanical = 9/10: 31,800 original miles. Engine starts and runs fine, but is hard starting when warm. Haven’t yet diagnosed problem. Runs smooth, pulls hard, and has good boost. Trans shifts fine. ARC functions perfectly, ABS is inop right now. Functioned when car was first finished. Probably the relay, as the ABS unit works fine when powered directly. No time to diagnose further. Exhaust is all original.
Steering, front end, shocks are all like new. Car rides and drives like you’d expect for 31K miles. A/C is still on R-12, and needs charged or converted.
Except for the minor paint work, hot-start problem, and ABS diagnosis, this is practically a brand new 1990 XR7. ALL the hard work has been finished. With a little more work, you could own one of the nicest, original, lowest mileage supercharged Cougars remaining.
