school me on variable vs non-variable PS pumps

How does the variable pump work? I assume it doesn't have a set output at a set RPM, which is why people call in variable. Does it somehow limit output or monitor the line pressure or what?

I have the stock 89 pump in my rock buggy and I just want the max output I can get from the pump, I don't want it to limit the flow/pressure. The pump I have has 2 wires sticking out of the ouput port on the pump. Do those wires do the ECU?

Thanks

Just don't hook up the wires and you will be OK.

Your right it is not based on RPM but speed of the car...the Speed sensor on the transmission sends its signal to the ECU and the ride control computer which when certain speeds are attained it sends a signal to the Variable Assist Unit which limits the amount of flow to the rack.

I am not postive if above is the "exact" way everything happens but it should be fairly close.
