I just took my stock 89 SC 5spd to a local shop where the guy seems to know his stuff and he runs dragsters on the weekends. He told me racing is his job and his shop supports his job :)

He quoted me two custom down pipes (replacing the O2 fittings), removing the cats and putting either 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 (depending on what will fit the manifold). Removing the resonator and putting a "Y" to a 3 inch. That single three does that funky turn around the 89 tank then split it off to 2 1/2 pipes to a couple of Magnaflow mufflers. He said $600 plus tax. He said he would port my manifolds if I took them off and that is an additional $55 per hour with about and hour per manifold. Good deal or too much???

Also, with this sound terrible with the cats and resonator gone? He said it should have a deeper sound (not ricey).

I am looking for everyone's 2 cents .

pricing sounds averge to below avg.....with no cats or res....you WILL get a ricey sound no doubt you need either or ........or both...just my opioion, i have had a setup with no cats or res...sounds very deep idiling but as soon as you mash the gas.....

I say get a later model gas tank. You can get a better exhaust done up that way and teh labour should be a tad less due to easier install

But pricing is cheap by my standards here

That is going to drone terribly bad without a resonator in there.

If anything, I would put a magnaflow resonator on it and no muffs...I have tried all with cats, only a resonator, only muffs, resonator and muffs on 2 1/2 mandrel...I personally like the resonator and no muffs...takes out the rice and still leaves it really low and bassey, and when you press the gas its still good and a lil on the loud side :) As said before with no resonator you WILL get quacking rice, I couldnt imagine no cats AND resonator.....theres my .02 cents
