I need to redo the the SVO hood. Its all metal. I dont want to spend money on it. Plus its like shoes, I am just tired of it.
So I am going to put it on a fiberglass hood. it should be lighter. I also plan to cut the vents and help with underhood temperatures in the summer time.

The dealership I used to work at. I gotta see if I can tackle the fiberglass work. then have them finish. Making sure there are little waves.
I usualy wet sand it and polish the car after they do the paint. It consumes alot of time and want to save a little on this project.
Not sure though. Anyone have any hints on fiberglassing.
I want to pick up a book in amazon.

I got my VFN glass hood today. Seems to be of good quality.
I trimmed the cowl for a better fit.

WoW. What is the rise on the hood going to be? It looks lower than the standard 3" one, or is that just the angle of the picture?

Ira
has about a 2.5" rise over the intake.
Any one know fiberglass body work here. I dont know if I should use Fusor to bond them or grind surfaces and use epoxy. Also should I use rivets or temporary screws?

That's cool. I alwasy thought the 3" rise was just too much. So which catalog did you find that piece in, and what made youthink it would fit??

I had to special order it by asking them to sell me the cowl section from one of their hood. It is form boa Fx but they seems not be doing well and almost never got my order. I had to file a BBB complaint and the sisters business ended up filling the order. I am just happy I got it.
About fitment I did not even know it was this long from the pictures. It was a gamble. I think it will work fine though.

I was just curious how you ended up with it that's all. Can't wait to see it on the car.

Fiberglass is pretty easy to work with, get a small amount of supplies from your local home depot first. 1 gal. of fiberglass resin w/ hardener, 1 mixing cup showing lines in 16oz increments, a package of cheap paintbrushes, around 10 or 12 in a pack (2 in chip brushes), and some rubber gloves.
Go to an autoparts store to get a 1/2 gal of duraglass, bondo spreaders, and chop fiberglass mat.
As for doing the glass work, when you mix the glass resin, mix 16oz at a time, for every 16 oz of resin, you will see lines in the (ML) markings on the hardener, use half of the between lines, about 1/2 in worth for 16 oz or 1 in for 32 oz. use a paintbrush to mix it thoroughly. Don't work in direct sunlight or high heat, or the resin will dry up fast. Cut the chop mat into 2 or 3 in strips, about 6 to 12 in long. lay them on the 2 parts you want to bond together, paintin them with resin until they are no longer white. Build up about a 1/8 or 1/4 in worth of strips going layer by layer. After all is dry, about 1/2hr or 1hr, grind down the excess to conform a fairly smooth shape. Then start duraglassing over the fiberglass, with the bondo spreader, shape the duraglass roughly how you need it. then let dry and sand into final shape.
Be shure to wear gloves, and some junk clothes, in the event you get resin on you, it doesn't come off. Lemme know if you need any other tips. BTW, what are you doing with your old hood? I've always liked it.;) ;)

And be shure to grind down the areas on the 2 peices you are bonding together. A few rivets or screws countersunk will help to hold things in place while the glass sets up.

I called the body shop that will do the paint and he recomends the Fusor panel bonding adhesive more then working with it fiberglass, and making holes.
Anyone worked with this stuff. I know is strong stuff but does it hold and keep its shape. Mind you it will be on a hot hood in summer heat.
What would be better?

I have used that fusor before, but only on metal, never fiberglass. I can tell you that the rep for the company did a demonstration, and after bonding 2 pieces of metal together with the fusor, they put it on a frame machine and pulled it apart, and the metal sheared before the bond broke. So as long as the stuff says its ok to use on fiberglass, it will hold just fine.

I decided not to use the cowl only the heat extractors, I think it looks sleeker. Engine should be real cool next year. Can someone say Shark :D.

I put about 2lbs of fiberglass filler on the thing last night  and I still need more.
I also used up all of the resing on the project not sure how much more weight is that, maybe 1lbs. So thats 3 lbs and counting. The piece I removed from the hood is maybe 1lbs and the extractor piece was 2lbs.
So 4 extra Lbs so far.
It is sure starting to look good though.
Anyone know if the primer stuff you buy at the parts stuff is any good? I dont want to throw good paint on it and have a crappy primer that will damage it.

Looks really good. The cowl looks to be about flush with the hood. Is that so?
I think I woulda gone with it bulging a little like the R hood does, but it still doesn't look bad at all.

Thanks everyone, Ill keep updating my progress.
It will be in spring time when I paint it. Once I reregister the car after hybernation. I think I will stop about here fiberglass filler is just about done I need to redo some low spots and then let the pros use the nice plastic filler and primer, after reading up on the over the counter stuff, I dont want to cheap out and have the paint get ruined in a few months.

You've gone that far already, why not finish it? The shop will charge you more than the cost of a cheap harbor freight paint gun and a quart of quality 2 part primer. There is no problem with good quality 2 part filler either. Any good parts store that caters to body shops will have the supplies you need.
You have lots of winter time left. :D

Project Comming Out Nice. Who Makes That Hood?

VFN.
They make stock 96-97 hoods and 3" rise hoods.
THis one is about 27Lbs with the R vent, according to my house scale.
I put it on the car, to test fit it. I had to work the hinge holes on the hood and some extra grinding in that area. Overall I made it fit nice ofter that.
THe front latch area is not reinforced, so I am going to have to use hood pins. :(
