View Full Version : First car(s), a 35th anny SC, and '90 SC
Hello everyone.
I bought my first car(s), a '90 Thunderbird SC 35th Anniversary edition, and a '90 T-bird SC. The '90 SC I bought for replacement parts, since the Anniversary one is in quite a bad shape. The tranny is broken, and some unique parts are missing, like the original seats, the front logo on the hood and the plastic stripe on the side (it was crashed once, and was painted inexperty, maybe he broke that stripe and didnt put it back).
So, we will take out the tranny from the '90 SC, and put it in the anny. (both have the 5 spd manuals). Gonna take a while to get the anny back in shape, so I appreciate every piece of help, like where can I buy the missing parts and stuff.
Btw, there are like 30 Thunderbirds here in Hungary, and there are only 3 of these '90 anny editions, so its nearly impossible to get any of those unique parts.

Hungary? OMG...thats great. You will have a hard time getting it back in shape...but man, if those are rare here in the states, i can only imagine the looks it will get in Hungary!

Well yea, american cars are quite rare here mostly because of the gas prices I guess :D It's even around 8 inches longer than my dad's benz, so it will be quite an unusual car on the streets ;)
I can do most of the restauration, but no way i can get those missing anniversary parts here..

Congrats on your purchase. Depending on how much you want to use original parts you could get the pieces that you need fairly easily. For one, get a standard tbird hood emblem then get a bottle of Cobalt Blue Testors (sp) plastic model paint. Paint the insides of the feathers on the emblem where the black currently is. After you've put several coast of paint on the emblem spray it with some clear coat.
AS far as the blue pin stripe goes 3M makes a replacement stripe that is very close to the original 35th stripe. Its just a little brighter and taller then original but to someone that doesn't know 35th they wont be able to tell the difference. Not sure of the 3M part number but if you search around you can find it.
SuperCoupe Performance sells 35th seat covers that I believe can be stitched in, in place of the original leather.
Then all you would have to do is paint the car, have your wheels repainted or powder coated.
Good luck!

Good luck with the restorations. You don't see very many 5 speed Anniversary cars anymore. You can try the buy/sell board for specific parts. There are always people parting these things out. Not sure how well shipping from a private party works for you.
They must not salt the roads over there. The red car actually looks pretty decent minus the rear damage. Usually the rocker panel ground effects are sagging pretty good from rusted rockers. I'd drive the red car as it sits!
Good luck and use the board for resources. There are many knowledgeable people here who can help you out.
Thanks for the help guys:)
Well yea, the red is in quite a good overall shape, it was sitting in a garage for 3 years. It only has some surface rust down there. But it was smashed so bad, it gotta be cut before the lock of the doors. (the fixation points of the rear suspension has moved a lot).
And for the anny, the left rocker corroded so much, you could almost see the ground from the car.. So we will have tons of work with it.
If everything goes as expected, we can start taking out the tranny from the red one on Monday.
Here are the seats I have in the anny now:

and the rear half that's gonna welded with the red's front:

Those seats look amazing. I am assuming they have been reupholstered at some point? Again good luck and let us know how we can help. It's hard enough getting some parts over here I can't imagine it's very easy over there. Good to see that you are fixing it up.

Those seats do look great. They look like new leather! Good luck with your restoration!! I'm sure shipping will be the killer for most of your parts!
Finally, we are making some progress. We have taken out the tranny (man, that was some damn hard work to get it off) and some other stuff from the red one, and if everything goes well, the tranny will be sitting in the anny tomorrow.
I'll post some more info about the progress and some pics tomorrow ;)
Guys, can ya help me? I dont know the name of this part in english :D That sealing thing at the end of the tranny. I ordered it from 2 different places here in Hungary, but didnt get it, so I gotta get it from the usa.
Actually that part keeps me away from driving my car :(

Most places online seem to call it a driveshaft seal. I usually call it a transmission output shaft seal.
Advance Auto parts lists the part as BCA #223012 www.advanceautoparts.com
Rock Auto (www.rockauto.com) also lists the same part number:
BCA/NATIONAL Part # 223012 More Info {Oil Seal / Acrylates / Shaft Size=1.181" Housing Bore=1.732" Outer Diameter=1.74" Width=0.276"}
Mazda M5R2 5 Spd. Manual Transmission $7.15
Hope this helps. If you need more help or clarification let us know.
Thanks, but actually it doesnt really look like mine, or am i missing something? :)

Both sites also list a BCA# 99114 but don't show a pic and it also costs three times as much. Not sure what that is. I've got two 5 speed transmissions sitting on my garage floor at home. I'll look and see what seals are in them. I do seem to recall the aftermarket seal looked different from the Ford seal, but it's been 6-7 years since I've looked at it.
That 99114 might be a repair sleeve for the driveshaft yoke. If the old seal has worn a groove in the yoke they sell sleeves that you install over the yoke to get a seal.

Congrats on the new purchase. Did you happen to see the other recent SC purchase in Hungary? Click Here (http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88783) to see the other thread, altough that person hasn't posted since his first post.

Well, I wasnt really into this T-bird thing in the past, but yea, i read about it, and he also posts on the hungarian Ford forum.
It seems i found the part I was looking for, at least it looks like it, and the name is also correct. (the last one)

edit: Any of u guys know where could i get the plastic stripe thats on the side of the car? Been to many part sites, but havent seen it anywhere.
Damn damn damn. Just what i was affraid of.
Found shops where i could get the lamps and mirrors, and even found ones where i can get the sealing. But havent found a single one where i could get all of em. If it has good price, it doesnt ship to europe, if the single part's price is good, the shipping is even more due to 2 locations blah blah.
Knew it wont be easy, but still.. My only hope is a friend in NJ, he may order the parts from the different shops then send it to me. Hope it will work, or else Ill be stuck with this car for a while :S
Finally, she is alive:) Drove her like 3 miles yesterday, getting better and better.
Still have some problems, for example sometimes the power steering almost kills the engine, forces it down to like 300 rpm, and sometimes it doesnt even bother the idle.
The speedo isnt working either after I switched on the foglamps :D
And I also gotta replace those rubber things which holds the tranny and the differential. (sry, dont know their name in english :) )

I'm not sure about the other problems, but I think you are talking about the tranny mount (bolts between the transmission and the cross-member) and the differential mount.
As for the rest of the problems, I suggest posting your specific questions in the 'Technical Forum'
