Popping sound when torquing rockers

Torqued down the OEM rocker arms tonight after installing the heads and intake manifold. I rotated the assembly by hand and torqued each rocker when there was no spring pressure on it. Torqued them to 25 ft lbs. Throughout the process, I heard several intermittent snapping/popping sounds, even when I was doing nothing. My guess is it was the rings moving into position against the cylinder walls. Anyone have any other ideas as to what it was? Went on for about 5 mins and then stopped. BTW, engine is bone dry of oil. Also, the plugs were out so no cylinder pressure.

Did you lube the cylinder walls? Could be rings moving in the pistons, popping out if they were stuck in there.

No cylinder wall lube applied b/c I am stupid.

Finally pulling the engine/tranny tomorrow and will be installing the other engine/tranny combo. Inspection plate/cover can't get here fast enough. :(
