View Full Version : Completely Stripping all the paint off the front bumper

This subject has been danced around in the past, but I could not find any definitive answers.

What kind of plastic are our bumpers made of?

Will paint strippers work without swelling or otherwise affecting the plastic? (SEM makes a bumper stripper just for plastic bumpers, but apparently just for non OEM top coats, down to original paint).

What about media blasting of some sort?

I just purchased a used bumper that has paint cracking and peeling all over but appears to have no primer or other paint below it. Possibly a new replacement bumper that was received bare and then wasn't painted properly???

I've been thru this once. I bought a new OEM bumper from Ford that had primer that was not adhering properly so I checked to see if there were any chemicals available to strip it off. I was told that none of them worked well on polyurethane. Also checked with bumper refinishers and they told me the same thing only the cost for them to mechanically remove it was more than I paid for the bumper. Ended up using plain old scotchguard abrasive pads and lots of elbow grease.
