I just broke the sensor off the fitting below the pass. side exhaust manifold. I'm trying to identify it so I can replace it. The fitting is huge and screws into the block above the oil pan below the exhaust manifold on the pass. side. I have a factory shop manual but haven't run across this sensor yet in an description. The car is a 1993 SC w/AOD. Thanks.

Sounds like the knock sensor. Dose it have a little heat sheild above it? If so that it.

That would be the one, thanks! It has a cylinder shaped shield on it. Is that shield really necessary? Kinda gets in the way at times.

The knock sensor pulls timing out if a the cylinders are getting too hot to prevent detonation. I won't recommend you leaving it out, but I left it off of my car.

It really depends what mods you do or don't have to your car.

Thanks for the info. I know what the sensor does, just was curious if the shield was really necessary, guess I'll be putting that back on too.

I'd definitely put that heat shield back (facing upwards) as anything plastic near the manifold is going to melt.

Just make extra sure you have right part # as this would effect your performance.
