Does it hurt anything to run without a cam sensor

eventually yes because the car uses it to advance and retard the timing depending on engine load vehicle speed etc....if it advances or doesnt advance to much under load in drive cruising you will most likely get detonation which is super bad news for your engine

Dude.. what took you so long? ;)

No.. it won't hurt anything. The EEC will still control timing advance as usual with the PIP (aka crank sensor) signal.
It just makes it more difficult to start. When you get tired of the key-on-off retry effort, a new cam sensor should fix it up. They're not expensive.

However, I should warn you that I've have a new one go bad in less than few hours of driving. I swapped sensors around and sure enough the "newer" one consistently caused a problem.
