No turn signals or brakes..intermittant

The turn signals are not operating and the brakes as well.
This comes and goes. Sometimes as I'm driving and take a hard turn or bump, they start working again.
I obviously have a short somewhere and before I start wiggling wires I am hoping that something similar has happened to someone here before.
What power or ground wire would be common to both?
Where should I start looking?

I will start there...it's due for a new one. I actually put a new one in a few months ago, (bought from Rock Auto), but it fell apart, so I put the old one back in. I did try to wiggle the key to see if there was any change, but nothing happened.

The side turning lights come on when you hit the turn signal switch, but not the turn signals themselves.

One time, the brakes started working again, but not the turn signals. I just know this is going to be a PITA to troubleshoot.
 
I have had some good luck with zip tie`s wraped around the switch. They hold it together and thats all that seems to fail as they dont make a good connection when they come apart. You dont need to remove the switch, just the cover to the steering wheel.

You nailed it..first try.

It was the ignition switch. Picked up a new one at Advanced Auto for $10.00.
