I will not be going to the shootout. I install my motor, bolted it up to the trans, installed the driver's side header and discover this little problem......

Bummer. What headers are those?

Rod,
They are Kooks.

Plug it and weld in another bung in the correct location. No biggie.

That sucks Ken. I had the same problem with my mid-length Kooks headers. I got lucky and was able to get a replacement header that the bung was rotated about the 15° needed to clear.

I agree with Duffy, but only if Kooks will agree to replace it after you return. Since the header appears to be coated, I wouldn't want a new bung welded in and not have the protection of the coating.

You could still attend and navigate for some of our around-town trips :D

I can have the collector cut and welded, but I paid for the header to work. The welding job will cost at least 100 plus getting it jet hot coated. I am contacting Bill Evanoff to see if he has another pair of headers, but I do not see how I can everything completed.

I mad at Kooks, because they should have the jig set up to weld the bung. I am wondering if kooks is going to pay for everything (i.e. shipping of new headers and return of the old)

We will see in the morning.

That sucks Ken...I had some Mustang headers years ago that were the same way, but for the price of the Kooks they should be able to get this right. It's also not the first time this problem has come up.
I agree with Kurt, you need to come anyway and help us drink all the beer.

Tony,
Don't worry I will be drinking that weekend, but I do not see how it will be in Dayton. :(

Thanks

That really is unacceptable. They should know where the bung goes on their product. I bought a set years ago and the bungs were wired to the collector for e to install and I felt cheated but now I don't know:eek:

Ken, that is a very simple solution. Just put the header on the other side and then it will point away from the transmission.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.......I just can not believe you screw something up when you have a jig to follow.

BTW, was your passenger side a PIA to install

I sat here and serioulsy pondered that for a brief second before logic took over....:o

That's some bad news right there.

That's why everyone should make slip-on collectors.

Why not just get a screw in plug for it and have a sensor bung welded a little down stream of the header in the exhaust?

Exactly. Plug it and put the sensor in the exhaust tube. Problem solved!

And yes, I was joking above. :p

Mine are located downstream from the long tube headers and they work fine. Don't let this slow you down from having a good time at the Shootout.

Are you mad about the bong or the collector not lining up to the cavity on the cross member?
Plug both sides and install the bongs on the down pipes. At what ever angle youd like they sell extensions on ebay I believe.

No, the O2 would hit the transmission.

Have you tried to put the sensor in to see if it would clear? I agree with above. It seems like too little of a deal to stop you from appearing to such an event.

I'm not so sure! Knowing Ken, he'll end up down in Florida from reading the map upside down.

I havent had much luck in contacting Kooks on a mess up that had on my headers.... I didnt have the problem you had but I said the heck with it and worked around it...

Plug that one off and cut another hole and weld one on... Dont let that stop the show!!!!!!

Geeeeze Ken, you think you're friends want to see you at the Shoot Out?!

And besides, after your surprise ending last year, you just need to get this done and be there!! You need to get right back on that dyno and show it who's boss! :D

I am placing a plugs on kooks screw up. I talked to Bill E. yesterday. He told this surely is not the first and I believe not the last. Those idoits need to make notes on where the O2 bung should be placed!.......How do they get the egr in the right spot?????? Kooks is sending me 304ss bungs and plugs, but I still do not see how I am going to have the exhaust welded in enough time to have the car running for the shootout. The guy doing the welding for entire exhaust is estimating 1.5 to 2 weeks. He is doing me a favor, so I can not push him too much. I still need tags and inspection for the car.

I have already cancelled my vacation time from work, plus cancelled my hotel. I also have told my two boys, daddy should be able to see your football games that weekend......it hard to go back on your word with your kids.

Thanks for everyone help.

You can split my room. I got two beds.
Anyways if its something you cannot retract then dont strees about it at this point. But you spoke too soon. A good exhaust shop would have these bongs and plugs, so you dont have to wait for the kooks to ship to you. You have a trailer anyways you can always drop the car off and give him the part when they come in, so at least he gets working on the rest of the system.

And he'll likely make a wrong turn down a dead-end lovers lane, where the people in the cars with the steamed up windows all appear to be men...but that's only if history repeats itself!!! :D:D:D

Ken, sounds like you've already made up your mind, but if you're really in a pinch, I might be able to pull some strings with the old man and get the welding done for you faster.

Yeah... 1.5-2 weeks is a long damn time to weld up an exhaust. The guy that did my downtubes (and they are works of art) only took 3 hours. Anyone worth his salt in exhaust work should be able to make an exhaust for the car in less than a day. You just gotta look/ask around.

Paul,
I am doing the exhaust with 304ss mandrel bends. He is actually welding them at his work. All I have to do is pay for the bends, which I am getting for less than 409ss.
