Last week i ran a 15.106 with stock 3:27 gears. Today i ran with 3:73 gears that i put in a couple of days ago, and today i ran a 14.725 @92.59mph WOW i new that i would be faster because i really could feel a great amount more speed and quickness when i installed the 3:73 gears.

So if any one is even thinking about upgradeing there gears i would stop thinking and just ack on it and put them in or get someone fast!

Good luck...also im thinking about installing gears for Sc/Couges around the Michigan area. my brother and i are really thinking about haveing you drop off the car and leave the rest to us...We will see how that goes though. Thanks

if you are serious about being able to install gears, and shim them right and everything, would you make a house call? I'll buy the beer, pizza, and pay you $50.00. I'm sure my SC buddies would be interested. Hell I myself have 2 SC's, one is getting 3.73's and the other 3.27's or 3.55's.

We need to hang out, I met your buddy Jason, his car is pretty sweet. I'm about 45 minutes south of you in St. Joseph. We have a few SC's in my town.

Jerry,

Were the track conditions the same? That is pretty good for swapping gears. I can't wait to run mine at the nationals. I also upgraded to the 3.73's. I have not taken it to the track since then and I also added some additional mods :D. Nice run!

PS update your signature! :D

Where in MI are you? Rick Stock wants to put 3.73s in his '96 Sport. He's from South Bend, IN., but he'll take the car where ever he needs to.

Stupid question but don't you have to break those gears in for a few hundred miles?

tbirdsc357

Yes ...it is recommended that you take it easy on them for about 250 miles or something like that. I think if you don't let them set they can start howling at higher speeds.

mine took about few days to stop wineing and i was really getting scared so i posted some post to ask why and i got about 10 diff. reasons why it was doing that.

but after after i was done at the track they started to go away and today i hear nothing !!

there back to normal but my car is faster..:)

It also usually howls when you screw up installing them because they have to be installed to within the thousandth of an inch or somethin...

How did you do that at home anyways

you see if you had bee following my post for like 3 mounths now you would of read that i was going to take out gears out of a 88 turbo coupe (3:73) and pull them out without taking the ring off just leaving it all together and putting them in my SC, all i had to is pull the PIG out and slid the 3:27s out and slide the 3:73 gears in!.. i got a new crush pin, and two axel seals in and though it all together.

at first i took everything off the driver side, brakes rotor droped the sping, strut, and so on, so i could slid the axel off and move the PIg over so i could slid the other axel off then pulled the PIG down and took the gears out!

i mean it wasnt hard but it was my first time doing it but looking back it wasnt as hard as i thought.

But thanks for careing

Matt: All he did was swap out pumpkins, he doesn't know how to install gears, so take it to a shop

See if you can get a Ford 8.8 diff. Then purchase some 3:73 gears and get a shop to install them for you. That way you now have a spare pumpkin and can easily swap if you are going to the track.

Or simply buy some 3:73 gears and get a shop to install them for you if you know don't want to keep your original gears. That's it.

do u have any idea about how much this should cost? and where is a good place to get the gears cheaper than the super coupe performance site. i just wanna make sure a shop isnt gonna rip me off if i go.

The easiest way to get 3.73's is to buy the Ford Motorsport Cobra aluminum pumpkin with the 3.73's already installed. If you wan't a shop to install 3.73's in your existing pumpkin, you will still have to drop the pumpkin for them if you want to get it done for a reasonable price. Plus you'll save about 20 lbs in weight.

how much would one of the cobra ones cost? and where can i get one? i am all about getting my car to lose a little weight too :)

When I installed my 3:55 gears it cost me $450.00 CAD, parts and labour. So I would say in USD it would/should probably run you about $250.00 parts and labour.

layinthesmack31
09-02-2002, 01:10 PM
is that for just having the 3.73's put in or is that for the pumpkin? i just really wanna do this for my car but i dont have a whole lot of money so i am just wondering about the best way to go about getting everything cheap and having it put in.

tbirdsc357

If you are talking about my 3:55's, than that was the price to get them installed, not for a seperate pumpkin.

layinthesmack31
09-02-2002, 09:16 PM
thats not to bad for parts and labor. what type of place did u go to to get it done? where could i get the parts? thanks

You can get the gears from any performance shop, just tell them that you need 3:73's for a Ford 8.8 diff. Don't forget to get a new speedo gear also ($20).

I had a local tranny shop install my gears.

yeah, the site is down for some reason if you go to the end off the site(listed below) you will see track and THunderbird Dragway will be on there but if you click on it, it will not open because the site is down.

http://www.gofastzone.com/links/links.asp

and also i ran a 14.725 @92.59mph i dont have a scanner to show you the timeslip but you can ask a couple of guys on sccoa for the slip time.

i really dont know why people keep on criticizing me about my time and placement of my gears but i guess they dont have nothing better to do....;)

Don't get offended ...........I ask everyone to see a timeslip, because I like to know reaction time, 60ft times, 1/8 mile speed..........
