As some of you know....the Bonneville SC Project Car actually started its life as a road racer. It was taken by Ford to a Road & Track Invitational Event for two years. This event was held at Lime Rock. Some of you may have seen and read the Road & Track "SuperCars" issue where one year's worth of cars were featured. The SC was one of those cars.

It was found during development testing that the rails of the K Member had a tendency to close in (read bend) on heavy braking causing steering geometry changes. This brace was made to stop that effect. It remained on the car through all the years it ran at Bonneville too since weight was not really a concern even though there were no twisties there. (At least not intentional ones planned)

Round tubing would potentially be stronger however...Wernt you using round tubing in your other braces?

Something else looks different up there

I'd be more inclined to make them out of round tubing for that application. Looks like something I could use for sure ... my poor car, all the abuse I give it, and no bracing. :p

you guys are absolutely right round tubing it is after thinking about the forces on it i scrapped the square tubing piece I made this morning and I just got a great deal on chromoly 4130 tubing in 1" diameter thicker material then what they used .....It looks like they cut up a folding chair to make that one very thin.....and ever since I started making these braces the local steel shop has taken to me and gives me nice deals :) so price is the same PM me for details if you guys want one Im starting on making about 20 of them today tomorrow and sunday they will be ready to ship tuesday . I accept paypal for safety and ease of payment you can pay through paypal as well with a credit card even without a paypal account which is nice...anyway I cant wait to get duffy out one and get one on my car I figure no testing needed as they did that on the bonneville Supercoupe already.

I see the x brace and then one brace on each side. What exactly is included?

blown94cougar
10-19-2007, 05:58 PM
The X is linked to the 2 front suspension braces I currently offer (they are available without the X as well) like an x in a box that should stiffen up the front considerably bolts on the same hole in the Kmember that the front of my lecb's bolt to, then bolts further forward in the front under the tension strut this system will essentially tie the whole front end together with the addition of the LECBs making the Kmember a strong mounting point so as to not move and change the steering geometry which Im sure it does quite a bit without bracing it ...Im sure these will help as well with firewall cracks if you install the front suspension X brace and the LECB's...Pm anyone interested If I dont sell at least 4 pieces this brace and plans will be scrapped

No problem Damon things have been really hectic around here with going back and forth from construction work when there is work to making these braces to family time to working on my car to designing new braces I barely have time to go potty wish they figured out how to do that on the run without staining my pants...lol J/K havent had much free time at all.

How much space does the x-brace take under there? Also, I'm not really clear, do the front subframe to LCA, the side braces, come with the x-brace?

fordfanatic2
10-28-2007, 06:47 PM
i also would like to know how low they hang. any problems with them scraping on lowered cars? do these also work on 4.6 cars?

and if i understand correctly it would be a three piece set-up?

x-brace
front brace

blown94cougar
10-29-2007, 12:53 AM
front suspension braces can be ordered seperate or they come as one with the X-brace already fabricated/welded to them, and you just bolt it on and go . The same with just the front suspension braces they come with just the 2 outside braces without the center x bolt'em on and go the Lecb's come as 2 braces one for each side . So basically you buy the X brace and the front suspension braces you wind up getting for free and im still offering package deal available on these as well so you wind up payin like $140 shipped to your door. any more questions guys just shoot me a PM.

I've built about six braces to tie the lower arm mounts for the rear axles. I could have one of my Sons post pics if you want to see them. I use the factory 1/2" holes in the rear to brace the sub frame.

CougarXR/7

I've been using flat stock in either 2" (for standard 3.8 or stock 4.6 cars) or
3" wide x 1/4" steel with 1 1/4" o.d. tubing for ours.

I usually make them 4 1/4" to 4 1/2" deep depending on the exhaust diameter.

I've made some with stainless two 1" x 1" channels by request.

I'm tempted to begin making these myself.

I normally use 309 stainless welding rod and paint them to prevent rust as well.

I may look into "other" car brands as well to see what kind of business can be made.

I don't foresee charging more than $75.00 to $85.00 for any of them

OUCH!..........no answer back yet either?

I printed out the pic of the "X" brace. I may measure my car and decide if I want to try that as well.

As another MN-12 brace and the rear axle braces I have been making. The rear braces I have made have been tested on our own cars. (a 94' 4.6 LX - a P.I. powered 95' 4.6LX my 92' S.C. and a friends 93' 3.8)

For friends with 3.8 or stock 4.6 cars I have used 2" wide by 1/4" flat stock.
I bore a hole and weld the tubing/pipe on both sides so more support is made.

For higher power 4.6/S.C. cars I use 3" wide by 1/4" stock and bore the holes.
I don't weld the tubing/pipe flush, as I want additional strengh and support.

I drill 5/8" holes (gives some mounting "wiggle" room) to mount the using 1/2" grade eight bolts and washers with nylon lock nuts.

I guess I should have one of my Sons post a pic of either of them.

I think I'll ask the plant manager where we buy our steel from and try to make a deal.

IF...........I decide to build these types of braces, I think I'd build ten or so of each, then mention it here.

The "X" brace? I'd use 1" or 1 1/4" I.D. and weld flat stock to the ends. I don't like the idea of flattening the tubing/pipe unless I was sure it was the best method of doing it.

I'd arc weld them and use E-6013 rod to do the job. Stainless rod might be over kill for this.

Given the forces at work (braking), you really don need the X brace. The forces on this part will be primarily tension, it shouldn't matter too much if the tube ends are flattened. Even under agressive cornereing, I don't think there would be measurable shear. Next time I'm under the car with my MIG, I'll work on this a bit more.

I don't understand how you came to that conclusion. He just either doesn't, or can't make tubular K-members. And from what I've read, you do not want a tubular K-Member on an MN12. Especially if you drive it on the street. People ended up having too many problems with them.

Ok then..............is anyone interested in the rear torsional type of braces?

I made up two more yesterday.

I bore a hole in the plates and weld them so the pipe/tubing is not in shear and should offer more support.

I used the 309 stainless steel welding rod too.

Birdman.....give me a day or so to post/e-mail you pics?

One of my Sons has our digital camera. As I mentioned in the thread, I see charging no more than $75.00 or so.

Shipping would have to be done on a case by case basis.

I'm not a business, just a Ford man looking to fill a need and have fun.

I'll be making up a serious welding jig to be sure every brace is identical to the next.

I have made up some with mounting bolt holes off set for a friend.

Currently I make the 1/4" plates 4 1/2" deep to clear exhaust pipes.

I can make them deeper to clear wider exhaust pipes.

I will include 1/2" grade eight bolts to mount them as well.

Thanks Todd.............I painted many of them the maroon/burgundy color and the 2" plate one hammered silver to see what it would look like.

For now, paint is the way to go unless this becomes a hot item.

Then I'll seriously look into powder coating, etc.

I started the plates and tubes/pipes for another three today.

I may work on them this week end.

I tried to find out what UPS ground shipping was. The site comes up with critical to 2nd day air rates. The lowest there is $25.23. I sent them an e-mail. Otherwise I'll stop at the local UPS store and check with them.
