Well I finally got the motor torn down and found the damage. I have enclosed some of the Pics I took.
I ended up burning a hole in the #6 piston top as well as breaking the skirting on the #1 piston. As you can see from the pics it also left some aluminum deposits on the cylinder walls. The good news is that it didn't scar the cylinder walls so that they are ruined. I was able to carefully flake off the aluminum from the piston off of the cylinder wall with no ill effects. I will hone the cylinders out and all should be good. I also found another cracked skirt on another piston, which was probably going to break very soon as well.
Enjoy the pics, and I hope this never happens to you.

What happen? Did you spray it or just detonate it real bad?Looks kinda expensive. Good luck getting her all back together.

I had a 93 that had the same damage. Why do they burn up around the rings? We went way lean. Opps

Must be a Clarksville Tn thing. Hope you get it going soon.

It is all back together with a new set of JE pistons, and fresh bearings, etc.

I replaced the defective fuel pump with a bigger/better one.

Absolutely none!! I was amazed they are perfectly fine, no stress or unusual markings anywhere. Hot tanked them last night and they look great, no ill effects at all.:D
I also have a funny feeling this had been going on for a while, because I had been seeing little bits of smoke through the valve cover breather for a while, but thought nothing about it. I guess that last run really did the number on it. I also found the skirting broke on the number 6 piston :eek:and another one, not sure which was also cracked!! I guess for 160,000 miles those older pistons are just about through!!:(
Oh well! Time to rebuild with 6 new pistons this time and I am getting them ceramic coated this time to help any other issues.
Will let you know how it all turns out.;)

Jay,
I have no idea when it happened other than the last run at the shootout. Like I said in a post above it could have been happening for some time as it was hard to start sometimes and just seemd to idle a little rough.

I saw in the other post the skirt was broke on the #6 and another one was cracked...at least know after you get it all back together you will not have to worry about them...plus you will have fresh bearings too!!:)
It could not have happened at a worse time though...maybe next year you and I will be in the final!

David, yes I was getting it ready for BG NMRA, and the fuel pump died at about 15 psi of boost. It was from that, and me rushing, and forgetting to set up my boost referenced timing retard.
I had planed on switching out pistons this Winter, doing some more head work, resurfacing the block and heads, and switching to Felpro MLS gaskets. (I like them better than Cometic) This just pushed it a little ahead. I am waiting on a fuel pressure regulator that is rated at 500 gph, that should be here tomorrow. Then will finish up the fuel system. It needs AN 10 lines to make sure it does not starve again for any reason when I up the boost. Used torque plates on it when redoing the bores, and trued them up a little while at it.
I need to figure out something that will handle some logic, instead of just having a low fuel pressure safety switch. I need something that does some checks at different levels, and looks for different targets. Will look into this over the Winter. I may be able to find some sort of 4-20 ma device reading float level. If the bowls stay full, let her rip. :)
I have ran it for about 30 minuets, and will change the oil and filter tomorrow.

Bruce,
Maybe a wide band o2 tied into MSD timing retard or 2 step rev limiter would be easier than monitoring float levels.

Well I had the Crank Mic'd today and all bearing services are in the middle of the spec sheet, so I will have it poloshed and ready to be put back in fairly soon.
So far everything is looking good with no major issues Will post pics when I get it going a little further along.
