Drove my car today and noticed low coolant light... Pop the hood and anti-freeze going everywhere! looked to be comming out between the heads and the intake! Is the intake most likely shot? 96... Wasnt there a recall on these? if it wasnt done will ford fix it? if not should i just replace it with a PI intake?? if so does anybody have one for sale? will the intake be ok without the pi cams??? what year to look for??? what a load of crap... I always hated the stupid triton motors now i see why..

There was a recall on tbird with the 4.6 in 1996 due to this problem, I'm sure it is the same for mustangs. You are more than likely out of the time frame though for it to be covered.

The Ford replacement intake, and most of the aftermarket ones, have an aluminium water crossover at the front, instead of being all plastic. You can find them on eBay pretty cheap usually, get one through NAPA or whatever parts store you deal with.
97M91 was the Ford campaign number for this, it provided 7 years of coverage from the original sale date of the vehicle. So no more coverage from Ford on this. It was an "owner notification program", not a recall, so not all vehicles were done. It only provided extra coverage past the basic warranty period, if the vehicle in question had a failure on this part.

TFS makes a nice replacement intake however PI intakes can be had for under 200 bucks

There are usually some on the TCCOA parts for sale section.
I would only buy an original Ford intake. The Dorman's tend to leak and have problems, stay away from those. Not sure about any other aftermarket intake.
You dont need the PI cams if you decide to use the PI intake manifold, just you will need to put a little RTV sealant on the gasket for the water crossover. There is alot of information on the TCCOA about people doing this.

The cams ar enot the easiest thing to do. I'd stick to just the intake for now. I believe new is under 200

The guys over at stangnet claim pi cams and pi intake are good for about 30/35hp.. Seems that the cams would be easier to do with the intake off???? since less crap is in the way?? or does it really not make much diffrence? Dam its alot easier to get to crap on a 4.6 in a stang than it is in a bird or a truck! took me 15minutes to change the spark plugs!! took about 2 hours on dads f150 when i did it for him.

Changing plugs is the only thing easier.
The cams are not EASY to do at all. The intake however is..Honestly Id rather change the whole engine then do just the cams.

That bad??? looks a hell of alot easier than doing anything to an sc :)

Not to mention the AC compressor and power steering pump. Keep in mind you are dealing with two cams here that need to be installed properly. Its a lil more difficult then lining up two dots..For a few HP I'd shy away from that. Plus the intake swap gives you most of the gain..A head/cam swap with intake would be ideal as it also would increase compression

Just fix the leak and save your $ for fuel upgrades and tuning on the SC.

Intake is cracked in the plastic crossover from what i can see so a new intake is a must! at least get one with the metal crossover...

Yes not something you can just fix. Jacob, Ford factory updated PI intakes arent that expensive. Id go that way rather then a new aftermarket or a used "who knows what youll get" intake

Damon,
Yes it is something you can just fix even though fixing it may include buying another intake. I meant don't bother with upgrading a bunch of other stuff, like the cams, TB, cold air intake, ect..ect. Just do what you need to do to fix the problem.

David I agree 100%. However if he felt the need to upgrade the intake the new TFS has shown to give improvement even on a stock motor..But at $600 it isnt cheap.

Cams are not to bad to install. The timing is actually pretty easy to set up. I could walk you thru it if need be.

I have all the following items which are new:
PI intake, PI water pump nipple, PI coolant tube, PI Alternator bracket and water pump gasket, which I planned on selling after the Holidays settle down.

PM me! I need to get this done sick of putting 93 octane in the sc and getting crap mileage going back and forth to work.. Looks like ill just do the PI intake for now anyway... Already have a JLT knock-off cold air intake on it.. Power is great but no sense in replacing the intake with a NPI considering its screwed anyway.. Pick up some cheap power :)

This one says that it can be used with 96 - 98 with PI heads. Can you use the new intake with the aluminum x-over with non PI Heads?
