Well, I picked up a new car finally. Seriously this is a God sent car, been praying for it for a while now! What she is...

1995 Ford Thunderbird LX
4.6L SOHC V8
Vibrant (Performance) White Clearcoat
Medium Graphite Interior
All options besides:
Leather (I have seats anyway)
Keyless (It has an aftermarket alarm/keyless system)
Spoiler (=ghey)
T/L (Damn, but adding soon)
She's got the moon roof, auto lamps, traction control... everything down to a T of what the old bird has. Only difference in stock form was a 3.08 in the old car to a 3.27 in the new.

Mods:
JET chip
4.10's
Wheels/tires
Aftermarket alarm
Intake work
Flowmaster catback & tips
Eibach boings
Sound system
Shaved trunk lock
97 Clear corners

15.8 by previous owner.

Here's the kicker though... 33,000 original miles when i picked her up.
"NICE"
http://images.scotsman.com/2007/05/24/2007-05-24T005034Z_01_NOOTR_RTRIDSP_2_OUKEN-UK-BOOKS-BORAT.jpg

Found her in Omaha off Craigslist, original owner papmered her... garaged and not winter driven since '97. This baby is like brand new on the inside. 1 little tear in the headliner, covered by the visors. Very nice car. I'll be using it as a DD for a while, and hopefully she'll have a garage soon.

My plans for the car:
95 SC Gfx
97 Hood (possibly custom/scooped) and headlights
GTS Solar wing
18x8 Fondmetals w/nitto summer tires
17x7.5 Miglias w/nitto winter tires
13"/11.65" Cobra brakes
3.27-3.55 TL
Remove chip
Trans cooler
Redo exhaust, dual center out MK8 tips
Work interior, using most of the old stuff, adding carbon fiber & brushed aluminum accents. Refurb the tweedies, have covers dry cleaned and convert rear seat to rear fold down. Also adding heated seats. Custom handbrake/cupholder console. Switching over the old sound system and finishing it off (w/ navi). MK8 visors w/ homelink. Blue LED's light conversion throughout, guage cluster mods TBD. Then, just ENJOY. (Turbo/vortech later)

Now, the BIG question... good old rusty. My goal is to get a welder, and a grinder, and just go to town on the rust. Strip her down, see if it's worth fixing. If so, then it's a FULL restomod. New YZ paint, chrome/suede/custom interior, 04 Cobra powerplant, hubswap... etc. Hopefully this will be done by the end of 09. Doing a lot of the work myself, maybe all? If she isn't worth it... then sell or pick n' pull.

Longest post ever. Thank you for your time.

Also, its .020" over, balanced, and blueprinted. Did not know that either.

If I go whipple I intend to. Kinda hard to justify spending that much more on him though, when I can get an 04 Cobra motor, already forged and assembled for $6-$7k including eaton. Usually with mods too, like porting, pullies, etc. It's be that much from him or more for just the long block. Oh the wonders of the dohc.

Cant figure what wheels to go with. I want to buy nitto's for the 18's... but it isn't summer yet!

-Joel

2TonCat
01-21-2008, 10:49 AM
17s are cheaper and have more sidewall
18s are sitting on the car in your garage
16s are too small for you to be happy with

Thunder95
01-21-2008, 11:14 AM
17's = $550 plus wheels ($2-300) = $850
18's = $300 for nitto's on front = $300
16's = $50 but no room for Cobra brakes later

99% sure it'll be nittos, but I am scared of using them before winter is through, and with the kumho's on the rear... too unbalanced?

Tyler, don't post absolute nonsense. PM him or e-mail him, that doesnt belong here. What does that have to do at all with my new car?

Now on the subject... This new car is going to corner like a slot car. 18's, with Nitto's hopefully, eibachs, tokico's, and a stiffer by 100k chassis compared to the old car.

Might wait for Traveler's 3.27T/L, or get a set of 3.55's done up.

Also looking at Cobra 13" brakes fore and aft, getting my SC kit smoothed and put on, and then redoing the exhaust tips for it. Should be a mean looking machine by the end of the year.

Money(A) > Money(B)
Accelleration(A) > Acceleration(B)
Maneauverability(A) < Maneauverability(B)

Thunder95

This is true. Also more reliablility. If she handles like a roller coaster, stops on a dime, and looks good... I'm a happy camper. This is my DD, rusty will get the go fast goodies this time around. I wouldn't mind a small turblow on this one though...

Not looking for a mindblower here... 300rwhp, sound like a jet engine, I'd be happy. Would make for a nice highway rocket.

Now rusty... God knows. 500rwhp, and I need to choose a head! LOL

Hey Joel - I've got a question.... why put a lil bit of work into the new 95 and then all the go-fast goodies on the old 95 that has a rust issue?

Why not make rusty driveable again.. PI motor or something simple and make that the DD. And with the new 95 - do your Cobra and blower on that one? No rust, so already a good base.

I want something reliable and nice to DD for a while. I want to get the rusty one in a garage, pull the engine, really look things over to see if it is 'salvageable'. If it is, then I'll start work on it. I think it is. That was my first car ever, and it has sentimental value to me, just can't get rid of it I guess. Always have wanted to supercharge it, and keep it till death.

If it's not salvageable, then I'll part it, burn it, crush it, and use it for a coffee table.

Duane, I know what you mean, I've been talking about it for a long time. I have just went with more important things instead. If I wanted, I could be un-engaged, without an 05 Grand Prix, no trip to Vancouver, and a very angry and upset girlfriend... but driving around a dohc v8 SC. I've put off engine mods to that car since high school, to make sure I get through college alright, and up on my feet correctly. Now that's all done, I have a year to get her into shape, and hopefully ship her off to MI sometime next year to have the drivetrain built. I can't promise it, God knows what He has in store for me, but I assure you if I can do it, I will. :)

He's going with good tips.. not hardware store pipe :p or cheap tips. And if the pipe is straight enough, it wouldn't be THAT hard to get them close to the bumper. I'd be more worried about melting the bumper a bit if/when the tips get warm.

He's going with good tips.. not hardware store pipe :p or cheap tips. And if the pipe is straight enough, it wouldn't be THAT hard to get them close to the bumper. I'd be more worried about melting the bumper a bit if/when the tips get warm.

-Melon

As much as I hate to agree with Tyler (:p) he's right. The tips won't get hot enough to melt the bumper. Mine have been up against the bumper for months now, with no damage. I'm still trying to decide if I want to cut the bumper like the LE was or leave it the way it is.

Well, I don't want to hijack your thread, but...

I might cutout the bumper. But to keep the "GT" theme, I'd have to switch the Twin Tips to single 3" tips. Then again, the 97 GT's didn't have cutouts like the 99's did soooo...... I might just go with the single tips (like the pre-99 GT's) with no cutouts. They'd also have to be mounted farther apart.

They're all season, so I can use them in winter as well, no need for more rims/tires. Probly going to hold out for gears from Traveler or SWS. I actually thought it'd be a good car for a PI swap. But, whatever works. It has that "Blue/Grey" interior that was popular in 94-95. Not as grey as mine, not as Blue as Melons. Car has 111,000 miles on it. He did say the engine was "frozen up". Of course, I have no idea what that means. Could be run out of oil and welded into a boat motor, could just be some water/rust in the cylinders. It has 15" fan blades, and a set of tires wouldn't hurt it any. Has drum brakes in back, needs a new spoiler. (It has a broken aftermarket spoiler on it) If I had an extra 500 I'd be tempted, but I don't.

I assume it's a full exhaust and not just like the back half?

What's the difference between painting something in the engine, say valve covers, or buying a set of polished or already painted ones? :p

And yeah - if it's done right, whether dyed, painted, or whatnot - it's ok. But if you do a crappy job, or use an off color (like yellow :p) then it's not so hot.

Taking the seat back out isn't a lot of trouble. Its just a couple bolts. I don't know yet if that will provide enough space for the exhaust or not. There is a way that will help that involves cutting it in half. Then when you reinstall it, use a band clamp. I'll get some measurements on my day off. (hopefully the ice will be gone by then)

I already have a 3.55 TL set up to go. BFG's get here today, I'll call to make an appointment... can't wait to try the new setup on the twisties of 435. Gonna be so nice to have somthing that can actually handle! I also found the 19's I want for her, SO excited about getting this car together! It's a set of Ferrari wheels, custom offset. 19x8.5 with a 245-40-19, and a 19x10 with a 285-35-19. Gonna be a beefy setup! We'll see how long it takes to get those though, it's a $1500+ package. I plan to get her in shape for DDing... then Cobra brakes, SC rear (smoothed), exhaust, pumpkin, then do the full interior, sound system, custom hood and headlights.

Micheal whats the story on the exhaust?

I'll get it measured today, and see what has to be done to get it in the trunk/car.

EDIT: Ok, got some measurements, and with the back seat removed (or at least lowered) I should be able to get it in the car in one piece. I'll find out today if I have tomorrow off. I don't forsee any problem with it however. I get plenty of time off as I've worked for the state for nearly 23 years!

Joel,

What about an emblem like this one?

http://forums.tccoa.com/image.php?u=473&dateline=1160423457

I saw one on a v8 exploder, was like an 04-ish. It was a titanium color, simple, and fairly small.

I've always liked this type of emblem, its a throw back to the original V8 trucks. :D

EDIT: Here's a link to a chrome one of the exact design i saw on the exploder.

Joel, guess I shoulda done the measuring in the daylight when it was still semi-nice out. Turns out there ain't no way its goin in the car without cutting it. Now I have cut sections in my exhaust that are re-attached. Works well with a clamp as shown with some silver exhaust tape beneath it. (the tape is just to get a good seal). You can get them at places other than Summit, I just used this for the pic. I get them at NAPA.

Well, I went ahead and cut it.. It a nice clean cut where the red mark is. Should be just ahead of the diff. In actuality it would make taking the exhaust down for rear end work much easier.

I've got it loaded in the car, if you're interested its on its way up, if I've ruined it let me know and I can pull it out of the car and put it back in the shed. I'll be bringing all sections photographed of course.

Top 10 things I learned last night durng my brake job.

1. Lifetime warranties at auto zone don't exist after 5 years.
2. Lifetime warranties re-exist when a 6'5" dood gets pissed OFF.
3. Brake pads from any Thunderbird can be exchanged for this warranty.
4. My fondmetals look good.
5. My right hand is softer than the passenger UCA. UCA-1 Hand-0.
6. My mechanic pwned me about my brake pads.
7. The water store garage = 5000 sqft of heated amazingness.
8. Bolts that havent been touched since 1995 = "teh suck" as tyler would say.
9. Bird calipers are actually painted black from the factory and not "rust".
10. I hate country music.

That is all.

Wait, thats not all. Goes in for final inspection & tokico's tomorrow, tires mtd & balanced today @ 4. I might go get micheals exhaust this weekend, or at least figure out exactly what I am going to do. I'm thinking 3" single to a SISO borla, out to dual out center MK8 tips on the SC rear cover. Think it would be too loud? Now I can do all this stuff, cause I have a HUGE ~~~ GARAGE! :D

I don't think it'd be too loud. Are you going to run any mufflers in the rear? Or just the M8 tips? Have a listen to Ryan's setup - my guess it would be similar even with you having a single pipe and his being two.

Oh, and you suck for having a huge shop essentially at your disposal :D

Also, the entire bottom of the car has been rust-proofed/coated. Nice!

Update:

Finally got this sucker tagged after going to the dmv 5x. Finaly just went back to Cameron and had friend's mom take care of it... (runs the dmv there). Pissed me off... one lady in Independence screamed at me for "driving illegally" after a failed attempt to get the suckers on. I wanted to drive the truck through the front of the building.

Anyway, the old 723 NXJ plates are gone... :( It's gonna suck getting rid of the rusty car, she's been a good ride, but i just don't have the money to mess with things. I've been under her a couple times and I think the work to make it right again would not be worth it. I'd rather spend the money on a newer mustang. So, as it looks, the rusty car will be done, and the new car will take it's place for a build hopefully around this time next year.

New car: Brought the SC gfx down, hopefully getting them painted and put on asap... and also... I need an exhaust! The flowmaster cat back didn't bolt up to the factory location, so a stock exhaust won't fit without some welding. If I'm gonna weld, them I might as well get something done... here is my idea:
