Can this crank be saved?

Hi, the number 3 (back cyclinder psxr side) rod bearing wore out and is just about gone. To the experts out there ... take a look to see if this crank can be saved. It looks like the bearing material melted to the rod journel. Is that possible? Thanks John

Yeah, you'll need to measure it with a micrometer and determine if its too worn, or take it to a crankshaft specialist or engine machine shop. If it isnt too bad, you should be able to grind and polish it down .010, but any more than that and the crank is no good.

if its to far gone they can weld it up and regrind it to standard size ive done this on a few rare cranks

There have been some people who have experienced crank breakage from welded and turned down cranks so be careful about who does the work. If properly done it'll be Ok. I sent one to Crankshaft Specialist in Memphis. For $550 he took all the journals down .005 and hard chromed(Rockwell 63 hardness rating) them back and machined to original specs. Before I install it I'll send it out to a place in Jersey to have it Mikronited.

If there is any question about that one being good, I would think you should be able to get a used one known to be good for less money than the cost to fix that one. There are several other SCers in your area who might have one.

Yeah .. the mid 89-93 crankshaft should be more common to find .. I had my 94/95 crank welded, grinded and polished down .010 ( rod #1 wiped out the journal on the crank ) .. if the crank was no good, I would have just parted out the whole rest of the car instead of restoring it. I took it to Ed's Crankshafts in San Leandro, Ca. and cost $277 for the work plus Main and Rod bearings. standard prices are for Polish - $65, Grind - $90, Grind + Flux - $125, and $55 for Welding. $87 for bearings.

Dumb question maybe, but shouldn't we start looking at an aftermarket replacement. I imagine those cranks are going to start becoming a rare item soon.

Thanks for the responses.... I am planning on getting a reman from S&S ( I think they are out in Seattle) I hope that my motor would be an adequate core for somebody locally. John
