Ok got in the SC today (finaly had some half descent weather to drive it) and when i put it in reverse it died for no reason.. went to start it back up cranked and cranked never tried to fire and i could smell gas... well thought maybe the cam-pos sensor took a crap so i tried hitting the starter a few times still nothing.. finally the only thing that would get it to start was to hold the gas to the floor and crank it! Started then but ran like total garbage! wouldnt rev past 3500rpm or so but would idle on its own.. Maybe this has somthing to do with it being kinda slugish after the new engine? where to start?? DIS?? coil pack??? cam pos sensor??? (have a spare) Never had this kind of problem with it so what is a good place to start??

Balancer maybe? Get someone to crank it over and watch the pulleys.

I had just about the same symptoms. It turned out the hose connecting the baffle on the fuel pump was torn. It would not start, I smelled gas as well and it would choke out around 3300 rpm. I replace the broken line and replace the sock while the pump was out and problem solved. Just a thought...

Hmmm replaced the balancer when i did the engine with a new advance auto unit..... Its ran like garbage since the new engine if you ask me so i wonder if somthing is just bad.. DIS coil pack somthing...... I have not got to look much into it as I have the mustang apart in the garage right now and its to dam cold out to mess with it outside... Got the intake OFF the stang just need to put the new one on (PI swap wheeee) Im planning on replacing the Engine Harness on the SC because some of the plugs for things are really so so and I know were i can get a good harness... Tried it again and it started fine but after awhile it died then when i tried to re-start it gas smell and it acted like it wasnt even trying to fire cranked over real fast etc..

My car acted like that when the cam position sensor went bad. After i tried to start it about a billion times finally it would fire. BTW what year is your mustang? The PI swap helps alot! I did it on my 96 t-bird LX and it made a big diffrence. Do not forget to replace that rubber hose crap under the intake and good luck!

I didn't think Advance Auto sells new balancers for the SC. The only place I know for a new balancer is Ford or BHJ, or did you mean new crank sensor from Advance. Just trying to get the details straight.

It could be any or more than one of those. You are on the right track. I would be willing to bet that a DIS sensor would be the culpret. Does the tach function properly?

Tach works fine... Advance sells balancers for $129

I just searched the Advanced website and they don't carry the balancer for the SC. I'd check it, because Autozone also lists one and you have to read the fine print to know it is for the 3.8 N/A engine only.

I'm leaning towards the balancer - if it was the $129 replacement that was for the "4" VIN and not the "R" VIN.

What happens if you start in neutral?

Remove the connector on the cam sensor to isolate that in case it is sending bad signals.

perhaps follow up in the tech forum.

I'll second the wrong balancer issue, since they are only offered for VIN 4 or the 94-95 at the aftermarket parts stores.

This balancer was absolutely identical in all ways to the stocker... Might have been orielly i got it at cant remember but i assure you its right. Wierd thing about it is it runs fine when you start it then a few minutes later it will randomly die and not want to start back up again.

I would say it is the fuel pressure regulator. When the diaphram goes, the vacume line to the regulator sucks lots of fuel into the intake manifold flooding the engine out. If it sets overnight it will start again until it floods out again in a few moments. If that is in fact what the problem is the cylinders have been washed down with fuel, and are in dire need of some lubrication before you run it again.
