View Full Version : Joel - Trans / Diffy swap meet?

Fried the trans in the new Bird on friday. I'd like to take the old reman from the old car and throw it in the new Bird. No idea how/where to get started with this so I was wondering if some of you knowledge-able minds could come over and help? Should be an easy swap, just trading trannies and maybe a tq convertor swap.

I can provide grilling, beer, whatever you guys want. I have access to a very large garage for the swap, and the old car is in a garage right now, so it should keep us out of the elements.

I'd like to do it this weekend or next, I really need the car back asap... my mom needs the marquis (grandpa's car I am driving now) back in Cameron asap. Anyone game?

March 22nd?
March 29th?

Need a tranny jack. I don't feel safe with the trans being held up above my head by hand, lol.

For now, to get you started, unbolt the differential and driveshaft, and drop the differential out of rusty.then you can pull the driveshaft out of the trans tailshaft.

I'm working this weekend, and as Jason said I'd planned on being in Salina on the 29th.

I've got an open 3.27 I can give you to get by if you need it. But the T/L is going to have to stay in the bird till I get the 3.55 built in May. Not sure how (when) I'll get the diff up to you though.

I should be able to come by on the 22nd but not the 29th/30th since that is Gabrielle's birthday that weekend.

Alright, it's looking like this weekend then.

Danny, Matt, Chris... anyone else? I'd really like someone that's done this before! :)

I will be getting a service for the injectors so I hope it will cure it.

Well, I've only got friday nights and saturdays for this... so I don't think we can get it done if we hook up at 2. Lets just choose a different weekend when we can all do it.

Taking suggestions on a time...

So what diffy are we swapping with what exactly?

You might want to talk with ford and see if they have any extra diffy shipping plugs left over. The fluid is EXPENSIVE. You thought mercon was bad?

Here's a thought... Take the gas tank out of Rusty, and sell it. People can't get those at junkyards because they puncture them.

Moar out of the way, the better.

Hey Michael, if you read this, did you wind up taking your trans out with the converter still attached to the flexplate? Or did you work around that?

traveler
03-19-2008, 12:22 AM
Took the converter out with the transmission. The bolts (all of them) are actually much easier to get to than I thought they would be. (even the ones near the top and the converter bolts)

I can't help this weekend, but I may be coming up on Friday to visit a friend at KUMC, so if you're interested in that open 3.27 to get you by, let me know.

2TonCat
03-19-2008, 01:15 AM
Ok, cool. Just wondered if you found any easier way. I'm not a big fan of taking transmissions out from the bottom.

Gotta do what ya' gotta do though!!!

Jason and I are going to try and make it by sometime this weekend and atleast make some progress.

The tranny really came out a lot easier than I thought it would. Of course, having a REALLY long extension for the bellhousing bolts makes it easier. With that you can reach the top bellhousing bolts from the bottom, which believe it or not, is easier.

J/k ofcourse

Thunder95
03-19-2008, 09:31 AM
I have some super long extentions to use. But guys I need to know who is coming for SURE. If we can't get it together and done this weekend, then I need to go to Cameron and work. If we can, I will go to Cameron next weekend. See my dilema?

Hell if we could even just get it out and into the truck I could take it to my mechanic and have him get it in the newbie.

-Joel

I have no idea if or when I'll be able to make it over, but I'm going to try.

How 'hosed' Is the new car? Wouldn't it make more sense to put it in the trunk so you don't have to take 2 vehicles up there?

No idea if we can get it done in a weekend or not. Start collecting spaceheaters so we don't freeze our asses off.

Thunder95
03-19-2008, 09:42 AM
The newbie will drive, but she ain't happy when she warms up. I've just let her sit so it can save the last hurrah for the drive to the mech if need be.

No idea ~~~ a key code is.

So this sounds kinda strange.. but I assume you've checked the tranny fluid? It hasn't been leaking from anywhere? Just a thought, but I'm sure you thought of it ;)

I can drop you off a TL 3.27 if you need. Remember though, you will need a different speedo gear for the tranny. It is NOT tough to swap them. What the heck to you need to drop the gas tank for though? Take some white out, and mark one tang on the rear drive shaft flange. Mark the flange as well so you will be able to put them back to normal. (I STRONGLY suggest doing the tranny on a seperate day than the rear diff). Take the lines off the side of the tranny, and take the bolts out of the exhaust. After you get that done, the rest is cake. Take the bolts outta the converter throught the plate on the front of the tranny and take out the starter. Remove the attaching wires AND the speedo gear from the tranny (this also includes the mechanical linkage on the side). The only thing left is the cross member, the DS, and the tranny bolts themselves. I recomend draining the tranny before you remove it too.

You have to have the car high enough in the air to get the tranny out from under it too. You will want to clean the cooler and the lines out with some brake kleen and then carb cleaner (so it will evaporate). Then, swap the new one in. As much as I hate to say it, I can not make it as it is easter weekend and I am working. Not sure about Sunday yet after church, and will talk to momma about that. I have a deal for you though and will give you a call...

Dropping the tank was so he has something else to try and sell. $$ Issues, and its only 4 bolts. Might as well.

Chris, I'll take the 3.27. Thats what the car came with stock so it should work nicely. Pm me what you want for it, and the MM baloon too.

Too bad I dont have the $ together, I'd love to do the 6 speed now.

Ry, we should hit PnP and see if we can find a T/L diffy or mark driveshaft or something.

with determination, and taking your time, you should be able to drop a trans in no more than 4 hours by yourself. I did mine in 2 1/2.. it was an aod, but close enough ;) i've also r&r'd about 150 trannys in my life, so it was cake to me... i wouldnt stress on it too much dude. all it is is nuts and bolts, right? :D

We'll definately drop the mofo out at least. That way Joel can decide if he wants to have a shop put it in the new car, or have us try it.

The Dr's head is off too, so that plug will be easily accessable :D

I own houses that have projects going that need work. I usually go up around 7pm, then work till midnight, then work the next day from 6-6 before heading home. I have a house to look at tonight @ 7pm too. Welcome to my busy ~~~ life. Maybe this would be a lot easier if you cancelled your play date with your buddies tomorrow! 6 bolt flexlate unless its a cobra or truck crank. Then 8.

Thanks a ton guys, it was a big help! Wouldn't be back on the road without you guys. Justin, I owe you my first born! We've got a little cricket noise that is probly the flexplate (cracked from bolting up trans without it aligned)... so we'll probly get the flexplate and maybe a vertor in there and see what happens.

Also, looks like this saturday I'll be up there as early as Justin can stand it to finish off the shocks and UCA's and alignment... maybe a diffy too. Then I think Justin wants a diffy swap, and probly get some interior goodies going for him too. Anyone game?
