Ignition key question

I lost the key to my SC and dont have a spare. If I take the VIN# to the Ford dealer can they cut me a new key? It's a '92.

I don't know if they can, but I do know a locksmith can make a key for the car. I had it done when I lost my key to my Bronco.

Chances are that the key code will not be available from the dealer, due to the age of the vehicle. You would likely have to get a locksmith to do it, as suggested.

Sounds like a long shot.....

But between my Ford buddies and myself we have had keys that work in our other cars.....Im guessin Ford keys in the 80's and 90's were probably 1 in 50 were the same for the ignition....I went to an auction and there was an 91 Escort....I took out a bunch of my old Ford keys and started the Escort on the first shot....I sold the key to a bidder for $20 that day....Grab a bunch of ford keys and try in see if you have a match....

The problem with a locksmith is it will probably cost you $30-$40.....You can probably get a new ignition with brand spanking new tumbler and springs for $30.....In the long run a new ignition with new guts is nicer....As these locks age over the years the brass tumblers and springs wear out and the springs start to get brittle...

Good Luck
